Portland, Oregon, October 14, 2008 - One of the most recognizable female icons in the world, Wonder Woman debuted in American comic books during World War II, and was the super-heroic star of a popular television series in the 1970s. Now, for the third year in a row, the heroine brandishes her Amazon bracelets and golden lasso as a star-spangled symbol for a charity benefit for Portland's most protective domestic violence shelters - Raphael House and Bradley-Angle House - and the Portland Women's Crisis Line. Excalibur Comics will host "Wonder Woman Day" on Sunday, October 26th from 12noon to 6pm. The free all-ages event will include a quartet of comic book creators signing Wonder Woman comics and special art prints, as well as a silent art auction with over 150 of the world's top artists contributing original art, plus costumed super-heroes on-site, raffles and prizes, rare memorabilia, and more!

Additionally, a second "Wonder Woman Day" benefit will take place on Sunday, October 26th, in Flemington, NJ, at Comic Fusion, as part of their “Super-Hero Weekend.” This East Coast event will benefit Safe in Hunterdon, a domestic violence shelter in New Jersey.

Some key points:
* Portland's Mayor, Tom Potter, has declared October 26th as "Wonder Woman Day" in the City of Roses.
* Portland's first Wonder Woman Day in 2006 raised over $15,400 for two Domestic Violence shelters.
* In Portland and New Jersey, Wonder Woman Day II in 2007 raised over $27,000 for the three Domestic Violence shelters and the Women's Crisis Line.
* Year One was filmed for a half-hour documentary series, FANatical, shown on Canadian and Australian national television. This year's event will be filmed for another documentary.
* October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Producing the event for its third year is best-selling author and DVD documentary director Andy Mangels, who is also the curator of the online Wonder Woman Museum, and one of the world's top experts on the famed super-heroine. "Especially in today's political and economic climate, we need a symbol of peace, strength, equality, and honesty,” Mangels says, “and Wonder Woman embodies those qualities. For over sixty-five years, her mission to promote those ideals has been detailed in comic books, novels, and television shows. The Wonder Woman Day events give fans and the general public an opportunity to celebrate the character and the people who create her adventures today, as well as to see and buy some incredible artwork - from generous and talented comic book and animation artists all over the world - showcasing the 'Amazing Amazon,' all while raising money for four incredibly important charitable organizations."

Jessica Elkan, Director of Development for Raphael House of Portland has seen the difference Wonder Woman Day has made for their shelter and the awareness of Domestic Violence issues. "Every year we look forward to Wonder Woman Day. The funds raised from this event enable Raphael House of Portland to provide life-saving programs and services to domestic violence survivors. Because of Wonder Woman Day and the dedication of Andy Mangels we anticipate meeting our goal of 10,250 safe bed nights at our shelter in 2008-09. This event also raises awareness that is critical to prevention and education, the key to ending domestic violence."

Ron Bannister, the new Development Director of Bradley Angle House says, “Bradley Angle House, the first shelter for survivors of Domestic Violence on the West Coast and one of the first of its kind in America is celebrating it 33year this year. We also want to help celebrate Wonder Woman Day now in its 3rd year! Through the creativity and philanthropic efforts of Andy Mangels of Portland, Wonder Woman Day has turned into an International Event raising over $42,000 for nonprofit charities who help woman and children who are fleeing the horrible grips of Domestic Violence. The event tops off a month long effort to bring attention to DV as October in National Domestic Violence Awareness month.”

Stacy Korn, co-owner of Comic Fusion, in Flemington, New Jersey, is co-producing the East Coast version of Wonder Woman Day. She says that, "Last year, the Wonder Woman Day event raised over $3000 for SAFE in Hunterdon, our local Women's Shelter and Services. With the help of many talented artists, the generosity of Andy Mangels and Excalibur, a few close friends, and SAFE in Hunterdon, we created a event that was fun for whole family while raising money for a great cause. Wonder Woman, Batman and the Flash put in appearances and took pictures with the kids (and a few big kids at heart), while artists were on hand to draw quick sketches and show off their work. It was a very positive experience for our community and everyone that attended! This year will be even bigger and we hope to raise even more money. It feels great to be able to give back to the community that supports us!”

About Wonder Woman
Debuting in All-Star Comics #8 (December 1941-January 1942) as the creation of psychologist and lie-detector inventor William Moulton Marston, Wonder Woman soon graduated into two series of her own: Wonder Woman and Sensation Comics. In the 66 years since, over a thousand Wonder Woman comics have been published by DC Comics. Wonder Woman has appeared in animated cartoons such as Justice League Unlimited and Super Friends, but most famously was portrayed by statuesque actress Lynda Cater in the live-action series from 1975-1979.
