For comic book speculators, when a movie trailer drops it creates a catalyst for prices to bounce, usually upward. That is why the first trailer for the movie Wonder Woman (1984) dropping at the end of this week is a major event. Apparently, Gal Gadot will attend Sao Paolo Comic-Con in Brazil this Sunday. At that point, they will release the trailer. This will prep fans for the movie premiere on June 5th, 2020.

The first Wonder Woman movie made over $800 million worldwide and set Patty Jenkins up to direct another potential smash hit for the sequel. Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins have proven their ability to knock it out of the park as a creative team. Gal Gadot is simply stunning as Dianna Prince a.k.a. Wonder Woman. With the potential for another hit on our hands, what Wonder Woman keys should we purchase? Further, it has been confirmed that Cheetah will make her debut in Wonder Woman. This begs the question: what supervillain keys to buy?

Wonder Woman #7 (Vol. 2)

The third version of Cheetah will be appearing in Wonder Woman 1984. Barbara Ann Minerva is a fallen archeologist that consumes a powerful plant in Africa during a mystic ritual and becomes Cheetah. The Cheetah is a powerful superhuman. Her speed and strength match Wonder Woman in battle and with fangs that can penetrate Superman's skin watch, out for hickeys.

This version of the character was first created entirely by George Perez--he did the script, the pencils, and even the inks in Wonder Woman #7 (Vol. 2). George Perez was a huge dot-deal in the 1980s. His artwork was crisp, stories and style were highly prized. His notable works: The Avengers, Crisis on Infinite Earth, New Teen Titans, and Wonder Woman vol 2. This is a Perez production that is a Modern Age book. It will probably last as a big key for this version of Cheetah. At least until premiere night, then who knows?

Long-Term

  • Grade 9.8 $169 last sale 11-18-19 returns negative -8%
  • Grade 9.2 $41 last sale 9-24-19 returns positive +48.4%
  • Grade 9.0 $11.50 last sale 11-29-19 returns negative -40.4%

Short-Term (30-Days)

  • Grade 9.8 $169 last sale 11-18-19 returns negative -10%
  • Grade 9.6 $109 last sale 11-19-19 returns positive +26.4%
  • Grade 9.0 $11.50 last sale 11-29-19 returns negative -61.1%

These numbers certainly don't make you want to purr; instead, it feels like a hairball you can't quite cough up. The long-term results are just flat out disappointing, even the short-term is lackluster, to say the least. If you are going to own the first Cheetah (Minerva version) then you might as well go all the way and buy grade 9.8. Considering it is down 10% what have you got to lose? I predict this will increase in value, but we have to see more of the Cheetah in the trailers.

All-Star Comics #8

Wonder Woman first appeared in All-Star Comics #8 it was her origin story and first appearance. The book itself had a host of other keys but these two are primary to Wonder Woman. Gardner Fox and William Marston (script) created WW in 1941, with a host of artists and inkers. Obviously, the first appearance of the primary female superhero of the DC Universe is no small matter. Put simply, she will not go cheap. Let's use the Lasso of Hestia and look at recent sales over the last six months and see if we can discern the truth.

Short-Term (1-Year)

  • Grade 6.5 $90,612 last sale 2-22-18 returns positive +880.4%!!!
  • Grade 5.0 $45,600 last sale 8-1-19 returns positive +42.4%
  • Grade 1.5 $16,800 last sale 2-21-19 returns positive +368.6%!!!
  • Grade 1.0 $20,000 last sale 10-8-18 returns positive +31.3%

The power of Wonder Woman from the Golden Age never ceases to astonish. These returns are based on just one year! There is only one way to sum this up, super-powered returns. If you can afford $20,000 for a grade 1.0 then I say, "Bravo!" The returns on the Golden Age continue to shock and awe us, but the true reveal here is the recent returns. There is one thing we can count on, Wonder Woman as a speculation hits like a haymaker from Mike Tyson.

Conclusion:

The third version of Cheetah in Wonder Woman #7 (Vol. 2) is the way to invest before the Wonder Woman 1984 movie sequel. Also, I like George Perez Wonder Woman #1 (Vol. 2) which contains the origin story of Wonder Woman. It is even cheaper than WW #7 but has better sustainable returns. Either way, remember you are betting on Modern Age comics that often drop in value after the movie. Remember, Cheetahs are cats and as the old saying goes, "cats have nine lives." Who knows when or where we will see this character again, maybe in James Gunn's Suicide Squad?
