Are we getting closer to a live-action Secret Wars? Multiverse of Madness could have provided an important plot detail that is intricately tied to the 2015 Secret Wars, and that is spurring collectors for these key issues.

It started last year with Loki and the Sacred Timeline. Miss Minutes explained that there had been a Multiversal war won by the Time Keepers, whose true identity was later revealed as the Kang variant, He Who Remains. With his death in the season finale, it would seem another war was coming.

That same year, Jim Shooter, creator of the original 1984 Secret Wars, revealed that Marvel had contacted him in regards to SW. The former writer/editor explained that the indication was Marvel Studios was planning a SW adaptation during a Megacon Orlando Q&A session.

The latest key development in the Secret Wars speculation came from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The concept of incursions between universes was introduced to the MCU, and that happens to be a key component of 2015’s Secret Wars event which saw the Marvel-616 and the Ultimate Universe colliding.

As the Multiverse crumbled, Doctor Doom took the power of the Beyonders and salvaged the splintered timelines to forge Battleworld, a Game of Thrones version of the Marvel Universe. Under the figurative and literal iron fist of God-Emperor Doom, Battleworld had various kingdoms made from different alternate Marvel realities.

Is this where Marvel Studios is going? That remains to be seen, but buyers are not taking any chances as they forage for these keys.

SECRET WARS #0 FREE COMIC BOOK DAY

In the age of investment speculation, free comics have quickly become anything but.

Oftentimes, publishers use FCBD editions to promote their upcoming crossover events, which is how Secret Wars #0 came into being.

The idea of incursions in the Multiverse planted in MOM is leading more buyers on the hunt for 2015’s SW #0 that was part of FCBD.

On eBay, prices are hovering near $10 for raw copies, but a 9.8 sold for $110 in January.

There are 49 copies listed on the CGC census. Of those, 42 are Blue labels and 35 are 9.8s, the highest grade registered.

Jonathan Hickman’s seminal event officially kicked off with Secret Wars #1. Between Loki and now MOM, there has been plenty of interest in SW, and that is leading buyers to this issue.

Since there are no major first appearances here, the prices are very much affordable, at least for the raw copies, which have been selling for around $20. Graded 9.8s are a different story. Those have been averaging over $200 for the past 90 days.

As with all the SW issues, there is an Alex Ross virgin variant for the second print. There hasn’t been a graded 9.8 to sell online since one brought $47 in 2019. If you want a raw copy, you can find those for about $10.

The debut of God-Emperor Doom has made this the preeminent collectible from ‘15’s SW series. It doesn’t hurt that Battleworld’s Thor Corps is featured on the cover art, and they could make their live-action premiere in Love and Thunder.

The thing to remember is that there are multiple variants and two subsequent printings to keep your eyes on. At the moment, the 9.8 standard edition sells for under $100. The 9.8 second print sold for $104 last month while the raw copies sell for $50-$60.

Don’t overlook the third print with a much smaller print run. For raw copies, those have been earning $10-$15 as of late, so you can easily get a copy for an affordable price.

AN INCURSION IS COMING

After all the mentions of incursions in MOM without it being the main plot thread, it would seem Marvel Studios is playing a game of foreshadowing. Rest assured, that issue will arise in future movies and streaming series. Whether that will give rise to Secret Wars is anyone’s guess, but it would appear the signs are pointing in that direction.
