Tom Holland is going to have his hands full in the next Spider-Man movie. Could an argument be made for Mysterio II to appear instead of the original Mysterio? Jake Gyllenhaal will play the super-villain extraordinaire. Mysterio's first appearance is in Amazing Spider-Man #13. It was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1964. What if the studios decide to use the Daniel Berkhart (Mysterio II) version of the character seeking revenge for his predecessor? That would "shock and awe" the Spidey fans and force everyone to chase a newer key, Amazing Spider-Man #141. Is Daniel Berkhart (Mysterio II) the character Gyllenhaal will be playing, or will it be Quentin Beck (the first Mysterio)? It is Hollywood anything could happen. All things being equal, the older key is worth more money. However which has a higher rate of return?

Amazing Spider-Man #141

Some rumors have Quentin Beck as the possible villain, but this movie doesn't release until next summer, plenty of time for changes. How far would Hollywood go with this super-villain? Let's take a look at the ASM #141 storyline for some clues. Mysterio II (ASM #141) uses smoke bomb illusions to create foes from Spidey's past in his mind. This would be a great way to intro new villains, without having to spend a ton of money. Second, Spidey thinks that Mysterio is dead. If he returns, this could terrify Peter Parker, building suspense and even horror. Finally, actors love to play characters in transition, or with pure emotional drives like revenge. I could see Gyllenhaal demanding script changes to create a better character motivation. Revenge is a big motivator especially portraying it on the silver screen? Far fetched? Possibly, but if this book (ASM #141) is used instead of the original source material, expect the returns to go up like a bottle rocket for Amazing Spider-Man #141.

Additionally, the audience would be treated to a variety of super-villains with tons of action. There is a long list to choose from: Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Vulture, Jackal, Morbius and the list goes on. This turn of events would be exciting and fun in a movie. As a bonus, this comic has an early appearance of the Spidey-Mobile who doesn't want to see that?

Cost of Investment

Besides how much can ASM #141 cost? It is minuscule compared to the first appearance of Mysterio in ASM #13. If the movie is based on Daniel Berkhart (Mysterio II) in ASM #141 and not ASM #13; then the price of the ASM #141 could jump substantially. If they choose to use this character, it makes a great story and a fun movie. I think there is always a chance this could happen.

What are the costs of this investment? Furthermore, does it turn a profit now? The last recorded sale of Amazing Spider-Man #141 was $617, on 11/3/17 (eBay). A safe bet is picking up a near mint (9.2) for only $85 FMV. Pretty reasonable price for this speculation. The grades below (7.0) have been jaw-dropper returns of +219%! That is not the Mysterio fishbowl obscuring your vision; merely an awesome ROI well over 200%.
