Sony has been plugging along making one Spider-Man-ish movie after another sans the wherewithal to consider that they may want a Spider-Man to go along with their Spider-Man Universe. Madame Web stand-alone movies are being announced...that's how serious Sony is. Sony, you had the chutzpah to make a Venom movie without Spider-Man and it semi-worked out for you and now you've gone crazy. Apparently, that move gave you enough confidence to call Jared Leto and ask him how he could take a character like Michael Morbius and ruin him like he did the Joker. Yet I digress. What is Sony's ultimate plan to tie all this junk, they are planning, together? Why are fans OK with supporting this ongoing chaos? Let's investigate where Sony's Spider-Man might be hiding.
Web of Spider-Man #119 features the first appearance of Kaine. For those new to the Spider-Man ethos, Kaine is a crazy clone of Peter Parker, created by the Jackal, and eventual villain to Peter Parker and the Scarlet Spider, Ben Reilly. We know that the property of Spider-Man will remain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for the next iteration. However, I believe that when the MCU says Spider-Man, they exclusively mean Peter Parker. You can keep Tom Holland in the role of Peter Parker for the MCU and make an entirely different Spider-Man over at Sony. There are plenty of Spider-Men that can fill the void. Let's take a look at a couple options:
Ben Reilly - Great choice for a new Spider-Man, as you could introduce a new character in a new and unexpected way.
Kaine - Make a villain for a stand-alone movie who comes to the realization that he is the real Peter Parker and then takes on the mantle of Spider-Man to do better. If you wanted to get really intense, sign Tom Holland to the role in a darker turn of his MCU character.
Miles Morales - Introduce Miles Morales into your universe as Spider-Man and make your universe young, fresh, exciting, and original.
Gwen Stacy - Take it another degree and have your Spider-Man be a Wo-Man. If you want to gain new fans, entice a younger and more diverse audience into the Marvel brand, this may be the best play. Spider Gwen is definitely a fan favorite to be watched.
Ultimate Peter Parker - Develop your universe as a known parallel, or alternate, to the MCU. This would be beneficial to all parties and give fans a diverse set of Marvel offerings to choose from. Crossover dollars are in play as well!
Spider-Ham - We all want this in live-action. No reason to pitch this.
Spider-Man 2099 - Bring in Miguel O'Hara as a future version of Spider-Man transplanted in the current time to take on Venom, Morbius, and whomever else Sony has a movie planned for (probably Rocket Racer at this point).
Tobey Maguire - Bring back the original Sony Spider-Man in a more mature role to the universe you are creating, like a narrator or guide to a new type of hero who takes on the threat. Plus, Tobey probably needs work.
