One of the single biggest drivers of comic book speculation nowadays is the MCU.  From major characters like Spider-Man all the way down to D-listers like Frog Man, the MCU has fundamentally changed the way people look at comic books.  The goal of this article series is to provide investors of all stripes with some well-reasoned speculation opportunities so they can be one step ahead of a constantly shifting marketplace. So for this issue, let's talk about Kang

Low-Cost Options

Avengers Vol. 7 #2

This book caught fire when Kang was first revealed in the MCU and it is easy to see why.  This absolutely stunning cover by the acclaimed artist Alex Ross depicts all of Kang's most well-known alter-egos, making it a really great cover play for each of them.

Given the MCU's current focus on the multiverse, which naturally offers a lot of opportunities for variants to appear, a book like this is a really solid investment.  The price has dropped a fair amount over the last few months, but comic book speculation is a very cyclical hobby and there are plenty of opportunities on the horizon for Kang to regain the spotlight.

Avengers Vol. 3 #38

This book marks the first appearance of Damocles, Kang's gigantic sword-shaped time machine and spaceship.  The ship was a major setting during the Kang Dynasty storyline and thus has some interesting potential for the upcoming Avengers film of the same name.

This book can easily be found below cover price and thus represents an excellent low-cost investment opportunity.

Medium Cost Options

Avengers Vol. 4 #1 2nd Print

Here are some of the reasons to pick up this book:

  • It was written by Brian Michael Bendis, who's works have made it into the MCU time and time again
  • It is a harder to find 2nd print variant
  • The phenomenal cover art features Kang
  • This book contains the first appearance of Azari, the son of T'Challa that many believe will make an appearance in Wakanda Forever

Need I say more?

Timeless #1 Ramos Variant

Miss Minutes was a big hit with fans and is bound to show up again in the MCU.  When that happens, fans will inevitably flock to this currently undervalued book.  This is easy money.

High-Cost Options

Avengers Forever Vol. 1 #1 Westfield Variant

I generally avoid store-exclusive variants, but it is hard to deny the appeal of this book.  Avengers Forever is a fan-favorite storyline that heavily focuses on Kang and (arguably) his most famous variant, Immortus, as they battle across time and space.  There are a lot of great elements from this story that could easily make it into the MCU, but the real appeal of this specific book is the cover.

Carlos Pacheco did an excellent job capturing Kang's essence as a grand schemer and tactician always seeking new worlds to conquer.  Bouyed by a (comparatively) limited print run, the Westfield exclusive variant does not come cheap, but has more than enough potential to make the cost worth the risk.

Avengers #10

Please note an earlier version of this article misidentified the first appearance of Immortus as Avengers Annual #2.  Thank you to user SJO for pointing out the error.

Avengers #10 contains the very first appearance of Immortus.  As I mentioned above, Immortus is arguably the most famous variant of Kang out there.  He has more appearances than any other variant and is easily the most fleshed out.  Furthermore, unlike almost all the other variants, Immortus is from Kang's future rather than his past, meaning his inclusion brings with it a bevy of interesting storytelling opportunities that almost nobody else can match.

Since Kang came onto the MCU scene, many investors have assumed that Immortus could not be too far behind.  Consequently, those looking to buy the book now need to be aware of the premium they are potentially paying and how close that price may be to a theoretical ceiling.

That does not mean investors should avoid the book, but rather that they should exercise some additional caution and perhaps wait to find the right price.

Out of Nowhere Pick

Avengers #296

If a reptile version of Loki can show up in the MCU, why not a reptile version of Kang?  I would not spend much more than cover on this, but in a multiverse of possibilities, I am willing to gamble five bucks on a whacky opportunity that's flying below most people's radars.
