I just finished watching the second episode of WandaVision on Disney+ last night (FYI, I wrote this blog on January 16th). Like all of you, I have so many questions, but  I love how Kevin Feige continues to take bold risks -- this is certainly no typical MCU superhero show.

Time to Sell Silver Surfer #3

Most speculators believe -- for good reasons -- that Mephisto is the villain pulling the strings behind the scenes. Several characters refer to the "devil" during the first two episodes and, more importantly, we know from the comics that Wanda used her powers to absorb two fragments of Mephisto’s soul to conceive her two children.  Many have speculated on Mephisto making an appearance in the MCU ever since WandaVision was announced, driving up the price of his first appearance in The Silver Surfer #3 (SS #3). For instance, over five years ago, a CGC 9.6 copy of SS #3 sold for $960; just last month, another CGC 9.6 copy sold for $6,100, a 600 percent increase in value. To me, this looks like FOMO; investors noticing a sharp rally in an asset, and a fear of missing out clouds all other analysis of the asset's current price.

$6,100 is a lot of money for: (1) a character that hasn't actually appeared (speculators may have made a mistake); (2) a villain (it's generally better to invest in heroes than villains); and (3) a book that is overpriced compared to its comparables. For example, a CGC 9.6 copy of Iron Man #55, which contains the first appearance of the biggest MCU villain so far, Thanos, sold for only $3,120 last month. According to GoCollect's CGC census, Silver Surfer #3 is considerably more rare than Iron Man #55, but I'm not sure it's twice as valuable. Prices may come back down to earth in the years ahead.

Other Minor Keys to Consider Selling

Not surprisingly, other minor keys for the Vision and Scarlet Witch have also exploded in price. Take The Vision and the Scarlet Witch #12, the first appearance of Thomas Shepherd and Billy Kaplan, Wanda's children, who would later become Speed and Wiccan. According to GoCollect, CGC 9.8 copies of this book were selling for under $40 four years ago; just a few weeks ago, a copy sold for nearly five times that amount. That's a pretty good return on your investment.

West Coast Avengers #45, the first appearance of the colorless Vision, is another good example. According to GoCollect, CGC 9.8 copies of this book have recently sold for $250; just a year ago, two copies sold for just $45.00 on eBay, a 500% increase. To me, this is another one to stay away from (and would sell if I still owned my copy).

Is the Beekeeper Swarm?

Some have speculated that the S.W.O.R.D. beekeeper who appears at the end of episode two may become Swarm, a Spider-Man villain whose entire body is composed of bees. According to GoCollect, prices for Champions #14 (Swarm's first appearance) have remained unchanged during the past three years; however, that may change soon if speculators start buying copies of this book.

Closing thoughts

There's certainly a lot of speculation in this post. If you have concerns about wild speculation, you could always go for the sure thing and just buy Disney stock (currently $171 per share). But speculation is one reason why this hobby is so much fun. Either way, enjoy WandaVision!
