Walking Dead #56
Kirkman, Adlard & Rathburn
Another issue of Walking Dead brings another issue that turns things on its side. Incredibly, this issue has a surprise at the beginning and at the end. Neither of which I plan to spoil. However, there is a big confrontation in this issue that results from the cliffhanger in the previous issue.
You may recall a swinging body from a noose at the end of the previous issue. Well, this person and their actions spark a confrontation about what to do with the body. To this point when someone dies, they turn into a zombie, its pretty straightforward. Someone in the camp has an itchy trigger finger and it sets off Rick. Rick wants to allow for some grief time.
Rick shows that he isn’t totally losing his mind. What he does in this issue is classic leader material that we saw from Rick throughout this series. On the other hand, he still has some doubts. Not a lot, but there is some slight hesitation. In the end, he refuses to take crap and that’s what you would have expected from him before his wife died.
Another development that hit this issue was Abraham’s nerves. I saw in the last issue he seemed a little too jerky when the heat came down on them in the town and my suspicions manifested into reality in this issue. He’s one to panic and it will cost someone their life eventually.
This issue is heavy on the drama and tension and lighter on the action. In fact, I’m not even sure the party moves from their campground and I think we only see one zombie the whole issue. However, the comic literally has you guessing page to page as to what will happen. By the end I had one guess about what was about to happen only to have the rug pulled out on me.
I don’t know how to get a new reader to “jump on” expect just pick on up and see if it sticks. This is as good of one as any. I can’t wait to see how the sore feelings from this issue carry on in further issues. This is a tremendous series and a terrific issue.
