In this crazy election year, there is a third candidate to vote for. Yep, drum roll, please...How about the astounding Director of  The Suicide Squad "James Gunn?" This guy created a major franchise powerhouse for Disney and Marvel with a little known outfit called Guardians of the Galaxy.  This group was barely recognized when it was a popular comic, and it looks to be headlining yet another sequel with umpteen more to come.

Now,  James Gunn is drudging up yet another moderately popular group the Suicide Squad for DC Comics. The upcoming movie is going to be big, fun, and have an expansive list of characters to invest in for comic book speculators. Which of Gunn's superheroes are some unknown possibly profitable picks? What to avoid? Finally, what return might we expect from these relative newcomers to the big screen?

What's next from James Gunn?

Recently the entire cast appeared in Empire Magazine giving us a rundown of this "Dirty Dozen" event. The Suicide Squad is going to be yet another James Gunn hit, "We see Weasel (Sean Gunn), Blackguard (Pete Davidson), Mongal (Mayling Ng), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), T.D.K. (Nathan Fillion), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Javelin (Flula Borg), and Savant (Michael Rooker). Recently, Gunn compared The Suicide Squad to Guardians of the Galaxy. I think you know, from pretty close to the beginning, that all of the Guardians are good - apart from Nebula, who’s the outlier. But in The Suicide Squad, some of the characters end up being good, some end up being terrible" (Source: CBR).

There are already plans for spinoffs on HBO Max. Gunn has plans for many of the Task Force X in addition to the popular regular ensemble. Who should we buy ahead of the movie that might come out smelling like a thousand dollar bill? There is a host of new characters lets look at some of the newbies to determine relevance these are the fun ones: Mongal, Savant, and finally Blackguard.

Mongal

This character first appeared in Showcase #8  in September 1995. This is not Mongul this is Mongal. Now, this is a long shot but if it costs you almost nothing to bet on a near mint comic book copy; then why not roll the dice? According to Fandom.com, the Mongal is superhumanly strong, fast, and durable. She also has energy blasts she can fire at will. In short, this character is either on a trajectory like  Slipknot, dead on arrival; or the other alternative is another interesting character for the team. With strength powers that can challenge Superman, she might prove an interesting member of Task Force X in the future.

Savant

This character first appeared in Birds of Prey #56. For the upcoming  The Suicide Squad movie, he is portrayed by the actor Michael Rooker. Yep, the very same one from TWD. Except in this one he has both hands and a handsome, ridiculous head of hair.  He has a genius-level intellect, is a master of martial arts, and has a remarkably bad hairdo. Savant suffers from a lack of short-term memory and constantly forgets things. He is essentially a wannabe villain. I do not think they will keep him around long as his powers are basically being a smart human being. This is a Slipknot type scenario to be sure to avoid this "ahem" hero.

Blackguard

This superpowered merc is a nemesis of Booster Gold. In fact, his first appearance is in Booster Gold #1. According to the Comic Vine, "Blackguard has super-strength and wields an energy mace and shield. The energy mace and shield are similar to something a Green Lantern would make, including the color." Given this first appearance actually has some value it might be worthy of review. Booster Gold #1 is probably the best bet of the bunch. If Blackguard can fit into the James Gunn menagerie on Suicide Squad; then it could lead to his appearance in a Booster Gold movie or TV series. Is this possibly something DC Comics and Warner Brothers is actually considering? Let's check out the returns on this bad boy for the last year and see what truth the numbers tell.

Title Grade Last Sale Return (1-year)
Booster Gold #1 9.8 $210 +33%
8.5 $49 +25%
8.0 $35 N/A

Conclusion

In the final analysis, pick up a copy of Mongal's first appearance ( Showcase #8 ) and the first appearance of Blackguard (Booster Gold #1). Mongal will cost you next to nothing  remember the old saying, "nothing ventured, nothing gained!" In addition, the strongest pick of the bunch is Booster Gold #1, the first appearance of Blackguard. Buy one of these in near mint minus or better, it is actually a double key. After all, it has positive +30% returns, ta boot!

If James Gunn was on the ballot these might be his party platform, so to speak. Bottom line, Booster Gold #1 is too cheap to pass up and so is Showcase #8. We can only hope that Gunn keeps his campaign promise of a "bold new direction for Suicide Squad." Which could justify speculation on these nearly unknown superheroes to the tune of mucho qautloo.
