On March 23 Heritage's Heroes and More showcase auction is coming to a close. This auction features hundreds of comics and memorabilia from all eras, perfect for collectors of all types! This is an exciting auction full of great items, and here are my top pics of unique finds to keep your eyes on.

The Yellow Kid Vintage Pinback Button

This Yellow Kid pinback from 1896 immediately caught my eye. Original Yellow Kid merchandise is a treat to come across, especially when it still presents so well. Originally a character in the Hogan's Alley strip by Richard F. Outcault, the Kid became a hit and was a merchandising machine. This pinback was part of a larger group of pins from the High Admiral Cigarette company, created in 1883 by The National Cigarette and Tobacco Company. These pinbacks can be highly collectible and are also unique historical items.

If you're looking to add this to your collection, prepare to spend a few hundred on it. Heritage notes that this pin presents in Fine condition, despite noticeable wear. If you are a pinback collector, this auction has several impressive items and lots waiting for a collector like you!

Captain Marvel Felt Pennant

During the 1940s Captain Marvel (now commonly called Shazam) was a huge hit with readers during the Golden Age of comics. Much like his peers, the character was also heavily merchandised. While many merchandise and toys from the era are in rough shape, this felt pennant presents extremely well. Pennants were a popular item to decorate your space with during that time, and have recently come around as a cool way to show your love of vintage items.

These specific pennants of the Big Red Cheese are harder to come by. Sales in the past have been for under $100, making this an affordable collector's piece. Heritage notes this item as being in Fine condition. If you do win this item and want to display it, I would suggest a sturdy frame to help preserve the condition.

Thrilling Comics #64

This striking airbrushed cover by the legendary Alex Schomburg should be at the top of every Golden Age watch list. This is Good Girl Art at its finest, featuring Princess Pantha entangled with a snake. This ungraded copy features 8 thrilling stories, with the first being The Fire God of Death featuring Princess Patha. Princess Pantha wasn't lost to time after the Golden Age. Her character was revived in the early 1990s, and again in the early 2000s. Currently, the public domain heroine is not being published in any current comic storyline.

Heritage notes this raw book as being in Very Good / 4.0 condition. Graded copies of this book don't come up for auction often. The last sale for a graded copy was in December of 2022 when a CGC blue label .5 sold for $91. A CGC blue label 4.5 sold for $309 in May of 2021, but there are currently no 4.0 copies from either CGC or CBCS. As of this writing the book is currently sitting at $260, and I believe this copy could easily break $300 for a motivated buyer.

Green Hornet Comics #29

Pulp-era hero Green Hornet made his debut not in a comic, but in a radio show in January of 1936. The program aired originally on WXYZ which also aired The Lone Ranger. The Green Hornet and his sidekick Kato would become popular heroes during the Golden Age of comics, with movie serials, toys, and comic book tie-ins. The Green Hornet has stayed on the outskirts of modern pop culture, though the 2011 film did attempt to bring attention back to the character (and ultimately failed).

This issue is from the Harvey Comics run of Green Hornet in the late 1940s. The legendary Jerry Robinson provided the cover art for this issue. Robinson is arguably most known for his work on Detective Comics, as well as for helping create the Joker. Heritage notes this ungraded book as being in Very Good / 4.0 condition. These can be found fairly often in graded condition, tho there are no 4.0 copies between CGC or CBCS. The most recent sale for a graded copy was in December of 2022 when a CGC blue label 4.5 sold for $482 on eBay.
