Machine Man, Lobo, Scarecrow, and even Scooby-Doo were in high demand this week, along with an unlikely Atlas Comic that begged the question, “Who’s buying this stuff?!”

What are the Hottest Comics? Based strictly on sales volume, these are the 1,001 bestselling single issues on eBay. While the highest-listed comics get most of the attention, dig a little deeper, and you will see a few titles that give you a clue at the uptick in trends. Then there are those issues that simply defy logic.

Welcome to Trends & Oddballs.

23. MACHINE MAN #1 (+976)

There has been talk of Machine Man being an unlikely MCU hero for years now. It started in 2019 when Joe and Anthony Russo casually mentioned wanting to bring Machine Man to life in his own movie. While nothing came from that, it has since left Marvel theorists on the lookout for clues.

This year, WandaVision spawned theories with talk of the government agencies focusing their attention on robotics. That has left some speculation that the streaming series could have laid the Easter egg for Machine Man. Whether or not that was the intent, buyers were on the hunt for Marvel’s Inspector Gadget and his first appearance. The interest propelled it nearly into the top-20 Hottest Comics this week, and it is one to watch going forward.

25. THE OMEGA MEN #3 (+215)

Is Lobo’s time coming? There have been persistent rumors to just that, but that has been said for years. Still, with the DCEU turning its attention toward the lighter side of superheroes, now would be the perfect time to finally put Lobo in a live-action movie.

Since DC tested the waters of an edgy, adult comedy with The Suicide Squad, it would seem that audiences would be ready to accept the over-the-top violence and quirky humor of Lobo in the DCEU. I must not be the only one thinking that, judging by Omega Men #3s rapid growth. In the past week, it reached the 25th spot after previously ranking 240.

86. BATMAN #189 (+913)

As James Tynion IV exits the Batman title, the word on the internet is that Bruce Wayne will step away from the cape and cowl as well.

When a new hero steps in to fill the void, DC has said that the reimagined Scarecrow will ascend the rogue’s gallery rankings to become a key player among the Bat-family.

That has resulted in an increased interest in the original Scarecrow’s first appearance in Batman #189, causing a spike of over 900 positions this week.

93. SCOOBY-DOO, WHERE ARE YOU? #1 (+906)

A few months ago, this would have been the winner of the Oddball of the Week Award. With cartoon tie-ins becoming increasingly popular in 2021, it is no surprise to see Scooby-Doo’s first comic ranking inside the top 100. After all, this is one of the most famous kid’s shows ever created, and the property keeps being reinvented for new generations.

In one fashion or another, Mystery Inc. will live on forever, and that will keep prices climbing for a long time.

ODDBALL OF THE WEEK

105. PLANET OF VAMPIRES #1 (+894)

According to this Atlas comic, as a human race, we are behind schedule. In 2010, astronauts set foot on the Planet of the Vampires, so that gives us 11 years to make up.

Taking a page from the Planet of the Apes and sprinkling a dash of  I Am Legend, the vampire planet turned out to be...Earth all along. After years of biological warfare destroyed life as we know it, the world became inhabited by barbarians and vampires. And here I had been prepping for a Mad Max post-apocalyptic wasteland all this time.
