Buyers were loving Spider-Man 2099’s first appearance this week while some surprising picks made returns to the Hottest Comics.

It’s time again to analyze those deeper finds in the top 100 best sellers. As you scroll down the rankings, you’ll find some comics that had been on the buying backburner for several months, including Beta Ray Bill and Illuminati key issues. Take a look.

6. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #365 (+19)

Spider-Man 2099 is making a bid for the Hottest Comic in all the land. Any guesses as to why? Surely it has nothing to do with that jaw-dropping trailer for Across the Spider-Verse. No, it couldn’t possibly be that. I mean, did anyone even take the time to watch it? Who wants to see the coolest-looking Spider-Man and countless other Spider-Variants in the sequel to one of the best Spider-Man movies ever made? None of you guys, that’s for sure.

So it's a mystery as to why ASM #365 is such a hot item this week.

25. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #316 (+22)

No, this isn’t Venom’s first cover appearance. His floating head (in the fine Marvel Comics tradition of disembodied heads on covers) was featured on ASM #315.

Since we get to see Venom in all his symbiote goodness on the front of ASM #316, this is the bigger key. It doesn’t hurt that Todd McFarlane was on his A-game when he drew this beauty.

50. THOR #337 NEWSSTAND (+40)

Is the Beta Ray Bill spec heating up once again? It seems that every few months, those Thor #337s get a boost and come charging back through the Hottest Comics. There doesn’t appear to be any new MCU rumors or gossip, and he’s not likely to make a cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Still, he’s already in the MCU thanks to his likeness on the Grandmaster’s tower in Thor: Ragnarok.

Since Man-Thing finally arrived only a couple months ago, it would spark interest in Beta Ray Bill.

75. SILVER SURFER #1 (NEW TO THE LIST)

Here’s a character that has MCU potential written all over him. We know the Fantastic Four are getting their own movie (who will actually play the FF is another story entirely), and that should eventually lead to the Silver Surfer making his grand entrance. There’s been rumors galore of him getting a solo movie for years, but who knows if there’s any merit to those.

More recently, he was rumored to get a Disney Plus special, but that doesn’t seem fitting of a character of his stature. In other words, how Marvel Studios will introduce the Surfer is anyone’s guess, but I can almost guarantee he’s on the short list of potential franchises.

78. NEW AVENGERS #7 (NEW TO THE LIST)

What’s this? Do my eyes deceive me or is the first appearance of the Illuminati making a comeback? It’s too early to say, but it does raise questions when New Avengers #7 suddenly reappears on the Hottest Comics. Granted, it’s toward the bottom, but that’s beside the point.

After they were wiped out of the MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it seemed the Illuminati were simply another of Marvel’s jabs at the fans. However, there’s plenty of theories pointing to other Multiversal versions of the shadowy group, so they may not be done quite yet. That could be the reason New Avengers #7 was on the hot list.
