Sure, the time-traveling despot who is the looming threat to the entire Marvel Multiverse may have fallen short against Ant-Man, but his comics were doing just fine. You might just say he conquered the Hottest Comics this week.
While Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has tied Eternals for the worst-reviewed movie in all the MCU at 47% on Rotten Tomatoes, Kang’s key issues were on fire this week. Not that we didn’t expect this. After all, he is the linchpin villain for The Multiverse Saga, so we’re not done with him by a long shot.
7. AVENGERS #267 (NEW TO THE LIST)
Whether or not Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will even vaguely follow the comics is questionable. Odds are, it will be similar in name alone, since Marvel Studios is a bit pretentious when it comes to the brand’s views on comic books and not hiring comic fans to create the films.
That in itself is a bit ironic for a shared universe built on the shoulders of those stories. Still, buyers were leaving theaters and heading straight for Avengers #267, which was the start of the “The Kang Dynasty” storyline.
18. AVENGERS #8 (NEW TO THE LIST)
Following on the heels of Avengers #267 is exactly what you would expect: the first appearance of Kang. Although he may have been brought down by the Avengers’ resident oddball, it didn’t keep collectors and investors from investing in Avengers #8.
Of course, with an infinite number of variants, losing one Kang isn’t exactly a problem, but Marvel Studios will need to beef up his reputation before The Kang Dynasty arrives.
20. HULK #1 (NEW TO THE LIST)
One of two comics on today’s list that didn’t feature Kang, buyers were shifting their sights to the Red Hulk’s cover debut. The likely culprit here is Marvel announcing that Thunderbolt Ross, now played by Harrison Ford, will be the President of the United States in Captain America: The New World Order.
Not that anyone is buying tickets to see President Ross; we’re ready to see him transform into a rage monster.
39. AVENGERS #10 (NEW TO THE LIST)
This has been a popular choice among collectors since last year. The first season of Loki gave us He Who Remains as a Kang variant, though his origin story is more closely aligned with that of Immortus. Then, in the Quantumania post-credits scene, we see what is surely a true Immortus in the flesh, and that had buyers racing for Avengers #10.
50. SHAZAM #1 (NEW TO THE LIST)
Now that Quantumania has had its theatrical debut, it’s time for speculators to turn their attention to the next comic movie on the horizon, Shazam: Fury of the Gods. Considering this is part of the old guard at DC Studios, it’s hard to get terribly excited, but that made no difference to speculators.
They stormed the gates of eBay and invested their dollars in the original Captain Marvel’s first appearance for DC Comics.
