It seems Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars #8 is going to be at the top of the Bronze Age scrum for the remainder of the year. Last month, it was the top dog. This issue is the first Spider-Man black costume. Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars #8 was created by Jim Shooter (script) and Michael Zeck (art). Currently, the CGC Census has over 12,000 outstanding slabs. This particular Spidey for some reason has dominated the Bronze Age rankings for at least the last year.

Coming in close on Spidey's six is the first appearance of Beta Ray Bill in Thor #337. This was created by Walt Simonson he did the script, pencils, and ink. Thor has never been the same since. In fact, I would say he brought about a rebirth of Thor popularity that had been seriously lagging since the late 1970s. In a heads up match which is the superior speculation?

Thor #337

This issue was created by the world-renowned artist Walter Simonson. He captures lightning in a bottle by creating an alien with the proverbial heart of gold: Beta Ray Bill. This character first appeared in Thor #337. Think of Mr. Ed with a cape. Walter Simonson created Beta Rey Bill as an alternative hero to Thor and it stuck. Additionally, Simonson also breathed life into a new concept of Thor. His Thor was kinetic, powerful with a gigantic cape and tons of Norse Mythos thrown in. It worked, it really played well and Thor saw a revival very similar to Frank Miller's version of Daredevil. Does the horse-face hero have profit giddyup like Secretariat or is it made for the glue factory like old Nelly?

Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars #8

This comic has been at the top of the list for many moons. Everyone loves Venom; therefore, any part of his origin or beginning keys are huge sellers. Is Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars #8 a more profitable investment than Thor #337?

Long-Term Returns:

  • Grade 9.8 $240 FMV returns positive +55.9
  • Grade 9.6 $130 FMV returns positive +24.4%
  • Grade 8.0 $75 FMV returns positive +31.3%
  • Grade 7.0 $50 FMV returns positive +33.6%

The first Spider-Man symbiotic suit has scored impressive returns, these are simply outstanding numbers long-term. The public seems to have an appetite for this Secret War #8 issue, it has strong long-term returns too. Also, it is much cheaper on your wallet.

Thor #337 Dominates Secret Wars #8

Beta Ray Bill simply dominates Spider-Man's symbiotic suit in this matchup. The comparison is an interesting one due to the fact Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars #8 has been on an upward spiral ever since the first Venom movie trailer wet the public appetite. Therefore, it has run up quite a bit already. Now, normally the cheaper book dominates in a head to head match up; because it is simply easier for the cheaper book to increase current value as more people can buy it. However, that does not hold water, in this case, Thor #337   is twice as expensive as Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars #8 in every grade recorded. Furthermore, it has returns that are as out of this world as Beta Ray Bill, double or triple the return of Secret Wars #8. Two years ago Thor #337  was going for about $125 (give or take) in 9.6 grade; currently, that is a $300 book.

Bet on Beta Ray Bill, after all, he beat Thor in a head to head matchup; Beta Ray Bill vs. Spidey-Symbiote should be horseplay (wink wink).
