Fantastic Four has been a staple of Marvel Comics going back to the '60s.  It seems like most Marvel fans back in the day were either Spidey fans or fans of the FF. I was a big FF fan. This was mostly by accident as I would buy three packs of comics at the local hardware store near our cabin in the Sierra Nevada's. Typically it had Dr. Strange, The Defenders, and the Fantastic Four. I was also on the hunt for any Conan books.  Whenever I could feed the need for fantasy; I relied on and was satiated by Savage Sword.

Anyways, the Fantastic Four is kind of an old school superhero team.  But these days the top Silver Age books recently were Fantastic Four #52, Fantastic Four #49, and Fantastic Four #48.  How have these comics faired during the Covid Age? Further, why are they the top three books in popularity for the Silver Age? Finally, what returns can we expect from this elite team?

Fantastic Four #49Fantastic Four #49

Fantastic Four #49 is personally my favorite book of the bunch.  The cover is just magnificent, with Kirby pencils and Joe Sinnott's ink. It exudes action, depth, and a heroic story about to unfold, and it definitely tells the tale. It was created in 1966 and written by Stan "the Man" Lee. This is the first full appearance of Galactus.

Fantastic Four #48Fantastic Four #48

Fantastic Four #48 is a huge FF key to be sure. Though the cover appeal is somewhat lacking. But as a key piece of FF history, it is second to none but FF#1.  The Lee, Kirby, Sinnott team-up worked well with this big key. It is the first appearance of Silver Surfer and Galactus the Devourer of Worlds! It was created in March of 1966.  The Galactus appearance is considered a cameo. Can this book lead to riches going forward? What kind of returns has this primary key for Silver Surfer be counted to provide?

Fantastic Four #52Fantastic Four #52

Black Panther is going to be with us for a long time. Unfortunately, the actor that brought him to life is not, RIP Chadwick Boseman I will always be a fan of your work. The latest film news from Marvel is that Victoria Alonso (Marvel VP) said, "No. There's only one Chadwick, and he's not with us...we have to think carefully about what we are going to do." That same article (Source: NME) confirmed that "Marvel will NOT use a body double for Chadwick Boseman" in the Black Panther 2. My take is it will be quite some time until the character is seen in a movie, so really there is no short-term catalyst. However, when they do find the right actor, it will be huge news and books will skyrocket.

Fantastic Four #52 is the first appearance of Black Panther. This character has only grown in value, pre-media hype, post-media hype, up-up it goes like Superman.  This month it has dominated the top spot in the Silver Age rankings. What kind of returns have we been getting on this niche investment?

Title Grade Last Sale Return (1-Year)
Fantastic Four #52 7.0 $1572 +40.8% (top 38 sales)
Fantastic Four #49 7.0 $1032 +36.8% (top 28 sales)
Fantastic Four #48 7.0 $2564 +17.6% (top 19 sales)

Conclusion

The Fantastic Four has been a solid performer, most especially the headliner this month Fantastic Four #52. With a year to date return of positive +40.8%, this book  Fantastic Four #52 is clearly dominant of the three. Now this will probably change when we see the next version of FF.

Surprisingly this month the Black Panther is on top and on the FF profit prowl. Investors or speculators now is time to suit up with your vibranium-bodysuits and claw your way to the LCS. Once there devour any one of these books in any condition for your collection.
