Top Three Comics: Silver AgeThere are some teams that are seemingly unbeatable. The 1984 U.S.A. Olympic Hockey Team, our wonderful U.S. Armed Forces or even the "Dream Team" of basketball from the 90s. All of these have one thing in common, quality teamwork. In Marvel Comics the best team is probably still the first team Marvel created, the Fantastic Four.

The FF has fought inter-galactic heralds, planet killers, and even alien invasions. Not surprisingly, their comics have also dominated the top Silver Age ranks from last month. The FF and its heroes are iconic and all have been "fantastic" investments. What are some of the exceptional returns you can count on?

Top Three Comics Silver Age - Fantastic Four #52Fantastic Four #52

The first full appearance of Black Panther is currently ranked the number two top Silver Age key. Recently the general public has seen the creation of a stand-alone Black Panther movie on the big screen for the first time. This character became so popular his movie is one of the highest-grossing of the Marvel films. With this popularity comes the desire to own the first appearance of Black Panther in Fantastic Four #52. This was a hot key before the movie ever premiered. Can you make money from this comic book? Is it a good speculative play? What are the long-term returns?

Long-Term

  • Grade 9.8 $51,700 recent sale 5-23-19 returns positive +58.3%
  • Grade 9.0 $7,000 last sale 9-5-19 returns positive +206.9
  • Grade 6.5 $895 last sale 12-15-19 returns positive +12.4%
  • Grade 1.8 $300 last sale 6-12-19 returns positive +62.3%

The long-term returns are simply extraordinary. This is a book that has great returns regardless of the movie. If you take a look at grade 9.0 it has returned a striking +206.9%. The Fantastic Four #52 was considered a big key to own even before the Disney purchase of Marvel.

Top Three Comics Silver Age - Fantastic Four #49Fantastic Four #49

Last month this comic dominated third place for top Silver Age book. This is the second appearance and the first cover appearance of both Galactus and Silver Surfer. Fantastic Four #49 is probably the top key among the Silver Surfer (except #48 below of course). It has been highly profitable long-term and with all the talk of a Surfer/FF movie this comic has been as hot as a solar flare lately. Besides you gotta love that awesome cover, definitely better than the Gerber Baby on the cover of FF#48. What kind of long-term returns can we expect?

Long-Term

  • Grade 9.6 $13,500 last sale 8-13-18 returns positive +65%
  • Grade 9.0 $2,755 last sale 6-22-19 returns positive +235.9%
  • Grade 8.0 $1,664 last sale 11-1-19 returns positive +116.4%
  • Grade 5.0 $485 last sale 12-6-19 returns positive +67.3%

I recommend buying a grade 9.0, it has had 57 sales and returned a whopping +235.9%!!! Yep, this is a book to covet. I would not call this a speculation. We are years from a Silver Surfer appearance, this book will probably continue a price trajectory straight up. This is a solid long-term investment in any grade or condition.

Top Three Comics Silver Age - Fantastic Four #49Fantastic Four #48

The King of the Silver Age for the last month has been Fantastic Four #48.  It may very well be the primary FF key to own (other than their first appearance) over the next several years. It is the first appearance of Silver Surfer and Galactus. Two major figures in Marvel and early Marvel villains. Oh, so you didn't know that at one-time Silver Surfer was a villain? "Oh, my stars and garters!" Eventually, however, Surfer turns against his master Galactus in an epic attempt to save the Earth. Our one-time villain becomes the ultimate superhero and savior of Earth. Can this Silver Surfer mega key still produce profits in the future?

Top Three Comics Silver AgeConclusion:

The wrap up for last month is fairly apparent from the high returns for Fantastic Four #48. This baby behemoth dominates the Silver Age. Why? Look at the returns above, +75%, +133%, and the outrageous +284.3% in grade 9.4; truly this is the book to own for the next five years. What do these numbers even mean? Quite simply, any grade is profitable in this highly-prized comic book. Buy and hold Fantastic Four #48 at least until the first FF movie, then, "It's clobberin' time!"
