GoCollect has many hidden treasures, one of its best is the comic book popularity ranking system done on a rolling monthly basis. This month, GoCollect has named the top ten comics of the Modern-Bronze Age and they are predominately from one publisher, with the exception of Spawn from Image of course. Yep, you guessed it, Marvel Comics. They have dominated the rankings for quite a while, but don’t feel sorry for DC Comics. After all, they do have Batman. The success of each and every MCU movie is helping Marvel Comics dominate the back issue comic book speculation marketplace. Can these top ten Modern and Bronze Age comics, give us insight and provide possible speculation targets for next month? All your GoCollect favorites are here. Let’s start in reverse order from lowest on the totem of popularity to the peak of perfection, a number one status.
Spider-Man #1 (Silver Edition) (Number 10)
Todd McFarlane controlled this revamp of Spider-Man, literally playing a one-man-band style of creativity. McFarlane was the writer, artist and cover artist for Spider-Man #1 (Silver Edition). Good lord is that a lot of work! I am sure his work ethic played a huge role in Marvel giving him his own Spidey title. This book is currently the number 10 most popular comic book per GoCollect and has some decent mid-grade returns ta boot!

This is the “first black Spider-Man suit in regular series, and the cover is an homage to the cover of Amazing Fantasy #15.” This comic was created on May 10th, 1984 by Roger Stern, Tom DeFalco (script) and Ron Frenz (pencils). Savage She-Hulk #1 (Number 8)
The She-Hulk is currently set to star in her own TV series on Disney+ and that catalyst alone is enough to own this comic book. Further, this is her origin story and first appearance. It also happens to be the last character Stan Lee created for Marvel, with art by the one and only John Buscema in 1980. Savage She-Hulk #1 is currently ranked 8th in the GoCollect popularity rankings for last month.

Spider-Woman #1 (Number 7)
This is a two-fer key with the origin of Spider-Woman and the creation of Spider-Woman’s new mask. It is simply a much sexier look for this deadly female arachnid. This first self-titled series was created by Marv Wolfman (writer) and Joe Sinnot with Carmine Infantino (artists) in 1978. Spider-Woman #1 ranks 7th most popular superheroine of last month per GoCollect.

Uncanny X-Men #266 (Number 6)
The “Ragin-Cajun” that everyone loves to hate is in the house tonight! Yep. Gambit has made the rank of sixth most popular book last month per GoCollect. This card flipping mutant comes courtesy of Chris “The X-Men” Claremont (writer) who created this character in Uncanny X-Men #266. It is going to take extraordinary effort to find Gambit’s niche in the MCU. Also, it should be noted Any Kubert and Mike Collins were the artists for Uncanny X-Men #266.

Amazing Spider-Man #361 (Number 5)
The first appearance of Carnage is a book to watch. Though he had a weak cameo in Venom, according to rumors he is the main event in the upcoming Venom 2. This spawn of Venom was created by the team of David Michelinie and Mark Bagley in 1992. Amazing Spider-Man #361 is at number five in popularity for GoCollect rankings.

The Eternals #1 (Number 4)
This is the first appearance of the Eternals and these books have been hot for the last 4-5 months. Eternals #1 is worth owning and selling into the movie. I have heard so many bizarre theories about this movie. Honestly, I don’t like any of the fan theories to date. They all sound like awful ideas, and potential failures at the box office. This month The Eternals #1 is the fourth runner up for the most popular comic book. This creation of Jack Kirby’s is a great speculation play all day long.
- Grade 9.8 $949 last sale 2-19-20 returns negative -19%
- Grade 6.5 $88 last sale 2-20-20 returns positive +25%
Amazing Spider-Man #300 (Number 3)
This is the first full appearance of Venom, the Millenial anti-hero. Much like Wolverine from two decades earlier, he has no compunction about a high order of violence which of course makes him a fan favorite. Created by David Michelinie (writing) and Todd McFarlane (art). This is also the first issue inked by the renowned Todd McFarlane. This month Amazing Spider-Man #300 was edged out by an Avengers comic, not its usual spot in third, to be sure.
- Grade 9.8 $1,900 last sale 2-20-20 returns positive +0.5%
- Grade 6.0 $229 last sale 1-31-20 returns positive +6.6%
Spawn #1 (Number 2)
This is the first appearance of Spawn, Wanda Blake, Malebolgia, Sam and Twitch. This is a big key for that title, try to get your hands on a newsstand copy if possible. This book was created by Todd McFarlane, Dale Keown, and George Perez and was published by the rising star on the scene at the time Image Comics.
- Grade 9.8 $85 last sale 2-19-20 returns negative -20%
- Grade 8.0 $40 last sale 11-1-19 returns positive +28%
Avengers Annual #10 (Number 1)
This is the first appearance of two of my favorite X-Men, Rogue and Madeline Pryor. There is some scuttlebutt that has Rogue fighting Captain Marvel in the next movie but who knows. I believe that Madeline Pryor might appear in the New Mutants movie. Avengers Annual #10 is numero uno popular comic book last month per GoCollect. To beat out ASM #300 is no joke. This is a solid book to speculate with right now and killed almost everything else in the top ten last month from an overall return standpoint, take a look…
- Grade 9.8 $576 last sale 2-24-20 returns positive +54%!
- Grade 6.0 $46 last sale 2-10-20 returns positive +44%!
Apparently, the first X-men to debut in Marvel Cinematic Universe will be Rogue. She will play a villain in Captain Marvel 2. This makes an interesting matchup and having a powerful X-Men character take on Captain Marvel should be fun to watch. The numbers quoted above speak for themselves. With GoCollect’s ranking system you can pick from among the top books easily and Avengers Annual #10 should be one of your speculation pics, “sugar!”
