Personally, nothing is better than being fully immersed in a game, feeling like you are truly a part of it. Except when it’s a horror video game and you're cowering in the fetal position for hours on end, scared to even look at your remote. Well for those who love that adrenaline rush you get after a good scare, I have a treat for you! These games were chosen from a list scored by Metacritic. I took the 5 I believed were the best from the list.

Here are the Top 5 Best Horror Video Games Recently Released

Until Dawn

In this game, we see a group of kids meet up in a cabin that has a deadly backstory. Throughout the gameplay, you uncover clues that help you make strategic decisions. But be warned, every choice you make affects the story in ways you won’t see until it’s too late. The great part about this game is that after you complete it, you can go back and change your answers numerous times. creating new stories every time. From personal experience, I can honestly say that there are some moments that really do get your heart pumping.

There aren't any copies of Until Dawn currently graded, and you can pick up an extremely affordable new copy for around $20.

Layers of Fear: Legacy

Ever wanted to feel like a crazed, misunderstood artist? Well here is your chance! In this psychological horror game, you play as a disturbed painter who is slowly losing his sanity. This game promises to be filled with dark twists and turns fully captivating the player. Your main goal is to finish a painting. Although there are no monsters in this game, the house itself is a visual and auditory disturbance with illusions at every turn.

New/In Box copies of Layers of Fear: Legacy can be found on eBay for $75-$100.

Alien: Isolation

The Alien movies instilled fear in many of us with this game being no exception. You play Amanda Ripley who is investigating and exploring a space station. While on the station you come across survivors, dead bodies, and the fearless Xenomorph made famous by the movie. During the game, you must figure out how to survive and escape all while the Xenomorph is loose chasing all living beings. Remember, while playing this game silence is key, if you make too much noise you will be next on the menu.

Alien: Isolation was released for both Xbox and Playstation 3. New copies of either version can be found for around $20.

The Evil Within 2

Similar to part one, this survival horror game is played from the 3rd person perspective as the character Detective Castellanos. In the game, you enter the world of Union where you must tread carefully in order to find and free your daughter. So far, the game sounds like any regular game right? But wait! There’s more! While you are searching for your daughter, you come to see that the world of Union has been turned into Freddy’s playland. All of those who lived here have either been killed or turned into monsters attacking everything in sight. The question is, do you have what it takes to save your daughter or will you end up like everyone else?

The Evil Within 2 was released for Xbox 1, and new/sealed copies can be purchased for $10 or less.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Resident Evil has been the epitome of horror when it comes to games. This wouldn’t have been a complete list unless I had one of them in here, so here it is! Unlike the prior games in the series, this game focuses less on the action and more on horror.

You play as Ethan Winters, who is looking for his missing wife. While exploring a house that looks like it belongs to Rob Zombie, you encounter this psychotic family called the Bakers and some alien fungus. While the gameplay is limited to simple movements, it does not lack in the action department. What I mean is throughout the game you will be chased constantly by crazed maniacs or weird alien fungus. Either way, keep your wits at hand because there will be many puzzles you will need to solve if you want to escape this nightmare home.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was released for Xbox 1 and Playstation 4. New/sealed copies can be purchased for around $20.

Final Cut

Personally, I have played most of the horror video games on the list and can absolutely vouch for them. These games will drag you in kicking and screaming till you find yourself hooked for good. Although these games do feature blood and gore in some aspects, it’s the psychological effect that takes a toll on the player. One moment you'll be walking down a hallway cool and calm. The next second your whole world is flipped upside down and inside out. Somehow the developers have found a way to perfect the jump scare in these horror video games, making them a must-have for any player.
