I took this opportunity to catch up with some old friends: the New Teen Titans! This is one of the earliest comics I remember reading (snatched from an older cousin, along with Warlord). Also, the Teen Titans taught me to just say no to drugs! Mostly.
Reading through New Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, I was struck by how . . . nice . . . the Teen Titans are. Frankly, I would have knocked that smart-mouthed Tara Markov, a.k.a. Terra, into next week–long before they realized . . . well, I don’t want to give away too much. In any case, this is a well-written tale populated by the kind of idealistic do-gooders that are scarce in an age of gray-hatted characters like Emma Frost and Azrael.
Another excellent book I can’t recommend enough is The Night of Your Life, by Jesse Reklaw. If you live in Portland, you’ve probably already seen his comic strip, Slow Wave, in The Portland Mercury. His quirky retellings of dreams are addictive and hilarious, and the best of them have been collected here. Just check out the preview to get a taste. The Night of Your Life is also a great gift for anyone who appreciates the offbeat and unusual.
