Kevin Feige has shown a penchant for giving fans what exactly they want. Once Wolverine joins the MCU, will we eventually see him fight the Punisher? I wouldn't bet against it.

Wolverine and Punisher are, without a doubt, two of the most popular superheroes in the Marvel Universe. Most collectors consider their first appearances in Incredible Hulk #181 and Amazing Spider-Man #129 as two of the most important grails of the Bronze Age.

Considering how much collectors value these two characters, it's surprising that their first encounter in The Punisher War Journal #6 is so undervalued. We love seeing our favorite heroes square off against one another. We've already seen Thor fight the Hulk in the Avengers, Iron Man fight the Hulk in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain America face off against Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War.

Punisher War Journal #6: Wolverine vs. Punisher

Personally, I believe that investors have overlooked this Copper Age comic. First, Punisher War Journal #6 is the first time two iconic superheroes, Wolverine and the Punisher, meet one another. In this issue, the Punisher takes a "vacation" by joining an expedition in the Congo in search of a dinosaur. Wolverine, also in the Congo, mistakes the Punisher for a poacher. The storyline concludes in The Punisher War Journal #7.

Second, Jim Lee, one of the famous comic book artists of all time, served as the artist for this issue. The cover that Lee drew for this cover is a classic and is instantly recognizable.

In spite of the above, according to GoCollect, the FMV of a CGC 9.8 copy of this book is only $75. Furthermore, over the past year, the value of a CGC 9.8 copy of this issue has risen by only 2.8%. Raw, high-grade copies of this book have recently sold on eBay for around $7. To me, that's a steal.

Considering how much the pandemic has supercharged comic book values during the past year, Punisher War Journal #6 has dramatically underperformed its peers.

Comparable to Incredible Hulk #340

Let’s review recent sales for a comic book that is reasonably comparable: The Incredible Hulk #340. Like PWJ #6, Hulk #340: (1) was published in the late 1980s, (2) features the artwork of another famous artist (in this case, Todd McFarlane), and (3) features Wolverine against another iconic superhero -- the Hulk. Although the two comics are not perfectly comparable (e.g., Hulk #340 was not the first time Wolverine and Hulk fought one another), they are reasonably so.

Nonetheless, Hulk #340 is worth MUCH more than PWJ #6. For example, on February 28th, a CGC 9.6 copy sold for $375.00 on eBay, nearly eight times the amount that a CGC 9.6 copy of PWJ #6 sold for on February 19th. Clearly, the market has determined that Hulk #340 is the more valuable comic book; however, I don’t think it’s worth eight times as much as PWJ #6. If investors should “buy low and sell high,” perhaps we should avoid a hot stock like Hulk #340 and consider investing in PWJ #6 at low prices instead?
