The first teaser trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder dropped on Monday, April 18, and an anxious audience studied every frame of the trailer to determine which comics they wanted to hunt down.  Some are well known.  Others?  Well, why ruin the surprise.  Read on to see how the market reacted.

First Jane Foster Thor

While there’s a lot of quibbling going on right now regarding the true first appearance of Jane Foster as Thor, collectors and investors have spoken with their wallets.  Thor #1 is the winner in the eyes of the vast majority of fans.

More than 30 9.8 graded copies of this book sold on Monday alone, including the (for now) record-setter of $400.  Thor #2, a book that some feel is the first full appearance of Jane Foster Thor, didn’t set any records so far and hasn’t seen anywhere near the volume of sales that have occurred for Thor #1.

As for Hawkeye vs. Deadpool #0, a book that many regard as the first cameo appearance of Jane Foster Thor, there’s been only one sale since the trailer dropped.  So, Thor #1 is the big winner in terms of volume.

But we shouldn’t forget about Jane’s first true appearance as Thor in What If? #10.  While there were no record setters, there were two 9.8 graded copies that sold on Monday for $2,000. That's just shy of the $2,200 peak for that grade, which was set nearly a year ago in May 2021.  This is definitely a comic to continue to track, though, as we see more trailers for Thor: Love and Thunder, and likely more of Jane.

Silver Age Thor

It took a couple days, but we saw our first two sales of graded copies of Journey Into Mystery #84 – the first appearance of Jane Foster – on Wednesday, April 20.  The 4.0 copy that sold set a likely new record slashed price of $2,290.  Assuming the final price was roughly 10% below, that’s still a 22.7% increase over the former high price of $1,680 set on March 22.  It will be very interesting to see what happens with the higher grades as they come on the market.

Journey Into Mystery Annual #1, the first appearance of both Zeus and Hercules, set two records on Tuesday.  An 8.0 copy sold for a slashed price of $2,850 on Tuesday, 5.8% above its peak of $2,425 set in December 2021.  Meanwhile, a 5.5 copy sold on the same day for a slashed $855, a 6.9% jump from its former high of $720 set on March 8.

Thor #129, the first appearance of Ares, saw a peak sale on Monday.  A 6.5 graded copy sold for $360, just a few dollars higher than its $356 peak from June 2021.  But a record is a record.

The Surprises

In a bit of speculation that very few saw coming, Tales to Astonish #46, the first appearance of Kraglin, saw a record sale.  A 7.5 graded copy sold for $469 on Tuesday, a 34% leap from its previous high of $350 in May 2020.  Tuesday’s sale now puts it near the FMV for an 8.5 copy.

For those not in the know, Kraglin is the character played by Sean Gunn in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, and he appears in the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer wearing Yondu’s crest.  Should Kraglin continue to appear in the MCU, look for speculation on Tales to Astonish #46 to continue.

But if you think that sale was a surprise, the next one will blow your mind.  A 9.4 copy of Thor Annual #5 sold on Tuesday for a slashed price of $975, far eclipsing the previous high of $137.50 set on March 2.  That’s a 538% increase in a month-and-a-half!  Why, might you ask, did someone pay so much for this book?  Well, it’s the first appearance of Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, the goats seen in the trailer pulling Thor’s ship.  I don’t know about you, but that strikes me as a lot to pay for two goats.
