Rising Golden Age ComicsGolden Age comics is what started it all. With so many modern books on the rise, I wanted to travel back in time for a few. Although hard to find and harder to pay for, these books paved the way for comics in general. So for those who want to time travel with me, here are the top 5 rising Golden Age comics.

Rising Golden Age Comics

Before we jump in, let's talk about the Golden Age quickly. Golden Age Comics span from 1938-1956 and featured a variety of genres. Many of these books reflected the issues at hand during the time and even kept many of our soldiers company during World War II. Unfortunately, preservation was an afterthought and many of these books have been lost or become scarce, making them very valuable. Regardless, this was the era that gave birth to our favorite heroes such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. GoCollect updates their Hottest Comics list weekly, but they separate out the ages into their own lists as well. This will article will go over their Golden Age Hottest Comics list. So let's dive in and check out these 5 rising Golden Age comics.

Rising Golden Age ComicsThe Atomic Thunderbolt #1

While trying to save mankind from nuclear war, Professor Josiah Rhonne accidentally created a superhero. William "Willy the Wharf Rat" Burns, a merchant marine with PTSD was selected to be the professor's guinea pig. During the experiment, the professor accidentally created a nuclear reaction destroying everything in sight except for Willy. Wanting to carry on the professor's dream, he became the Atomic Thunderbolt. Powers include resistance to radiation and nuclear explosions, fly, generate explosions with his fists, and creating air "waves" in what I assume would be like a Thunder Clap. His one and only recorded mission were to saving 2 alchemists named Rigor and Mortis. Currently, there are only 58 copies of the CGC census with the highest grade being an 8.5.

Batman #24

You can never go wrong with a Golden Age Batman comic. In this book we see Professor Nichols use hypnosis to send the minds of Batman and Robin back to Ancient Rome. While there, they foil a corruption plot and save the day (as always!). One cool feature that I love is how the on the cover you can see the words, "Back the 5th War Loan!" alluding to the war bonds sold to finance World War II. Sorry, I'm a History Major so I love seeing tidbits of history in our books. According to the CGC census, there are currently 199 books with the highest grade being a 9.6 holding a value of $5,750.

Georgie Comics #3 Rising Golden Age Comics

One of the classic books by Timely that features a typical New York teenager named, Georgie. This is one of the many humor books published by Timely that are starting to see a rise as well. So far it has seen 5 sales alone for the month of June making it a hot book. According to the CGC census, there are only 7 books that are graded with a 9.4 being the highest. An 8.5 was sold for $240 in June by Heritage Comics, so it still is affordable if you can find one.

Rising Golden Age Comics

Batman #44

This book features a gorgeous red cover with the many faces of Joker surrounding our favorite caped crusaders. Multiple stories included such as Joker becomes a gambler and the return of Professor Nichols from issue #24. Professor Nichols sends Bruce back to the past, again, but this time to solve a mystery surrounding his ancestor Silas Wayne. Silas has appeared in other issues of Batman, being the disappointed great-uncle. He did not approve of Bruce's playboy lifestyle. Currently, there are 132 copies of this book with 12 of them being sold this year alone. Two books hold the highest grade, sitting at a 9.0.

Tales from the Crypt #33 Rising Golden Age Comics

I remember growing up watching the Crypt Keeper in action. Watching him cackle at his own puns while introducing the next segment. If you remember him as well as I do then this is the book for you. Not only is it a Golden Age classic, but we get to find out what his origin truly is. With only 157 books in the CGC census, we can see why it maintains a decent value throughout time. This book even holds 2 at the 9.8 level! Imagine having this beauty in a 9.8! The FMV for that 9.8 is sitting at $8,500 which is not cheap but is not expensive by Golden Age standards.
