Dust off your Fantastic Four #48s, because the Silver Surfer rumors are gaining traction.

After Werewolf By Night struck gold on Disney Plus, all the latest gossip is swirling around the idea that basically every new character will get a streaming special. In recent weeks, the talk was that Nova would get the nod, but now something much more impressive has entered the sweepstakes.

The juicy tidbit claims that a Silver Surfer Disney Plus special is in the works. In fact, gossip sites are reporting that he will make it into the MCU before the FF get their first Marvel movie. That would indicate that the Surfer is a major player for The Multiverse Saga. In the collecting world, that means a price jump is coming for those classic Surfer keys.

Of course, we’ve heard all this before. There have been rumors about the Surfer coming to the MCU since Endgame. For that matter, there was talk about him getting a solo project soon after Disney bought Fox and all its intellectual properties. That being said, take the latest scuttlebutt with a grain of salt.

Plausible or not, the reports should affect the secondary market, not that Surfer grails need any excuse to be more expensive. Collectors love the Galactus Trilogy, and those issues already had massive price tags. In light of the news, let’s take a quick gauge on those Silver Age FFs.

FANTASTIC FOUR #48

We might as well start at the top of the heap with the first appearances of both the Surfer and Galactus. In the past 30 days, the highest grade sold has been the 9.2, which brought $15,099 on October 16 through eBay. Prior to that, it had earned as much as $24,000, but that was through Heritage Auctions, and the final price includes their lofty commissions.

Most recently, eBay saw a graded 3.0 sell for $1,203 on Sunday. The day prior, a 3.5 went for $1,225.

FANTASTIC FOUR #49

This one has been getting more popular in the past few years. Much of that is due to the exorbitant costs for FF #48. Still, this is a gem for any Silver Surfer and Galactus fans. Not only does the Devourer of Worlds make his first full appearance, but both characters are featured in their first cover art.

Since Saturday, there were raw and graded varieties on the move. Two lower-grade raw copies sold for $450 and $570. On the graded side, a 4.5 sold for $774 while a 3.5 hit $670.

FANTASTIC FOUR #50

To complete the Galactus Trilogy, you need the cheapest of the three issues, FF #50. Besides being the Surfer’s first time as the cover art’s focal point, this one has the least significance to the overall story. On the plus side, you can own this one for pennies on the dollar, at least compared to the likes of FF #48. This weekend saw a graded 3.0 sell for $250, so it’s not exactly a dollar-bin find, but that’s not bad to complete the trifecta.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE

MCU audiences want the Surfer almost as badly as they want the X-Men, and that makes for a breeding ground of baseless gossip. In the grand scheme, Marvel and Disney are looking at profits, and putting the Silver Surfer in a theatrical release would make far more than a one-hour Disney Plus special. Still, what it could point to is that Marvel has him on the radar for his grand debut, which could be sooner than we expected.
