The fact that 2020's The New Mutants performed so poorly is precisely the reason why you should buy the first appearance of the New Mutants in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 soon. Like some of the other 20th Century Fox X-Men-related films, 2020's The New Mutants flopped. The film received an abysmal 35% aggregate rating from critics and a 56% rating from casual viewers. Even with the huge spike in new comic-book-related content on YouTube and other forums since the start of the pandemic, it generated no buzz. It provided yet another reminder of why many Marvel fans were delighted that Disney had purchased 20th Century Fox along with the rights to the X-Men franchise.

Reason #1: Buy the Dip.

Unlike almost all mutant-related Marvel books during the past year, this graphic novel has actually lost quite a bit of value. For example, just a few months prior to the release of the film, CGC 9.6 copies of this book sold for around $380. Now, according to GoCollect, the FMV of this same book is $260. Raw, high-grade copies on eBay have recently sold for around half of their estimated FMV (or for $55 to $70).

Reason #2: This Book Has Multiple 1st Appearances.

Not only does Marvel Graphic Novel #4 contain the first appearance of the New Mutants team, but it also includes the first appearance of (1) Cannonball; (2) Wolfsbane; (3) Sunspot; (4) Karma; and (5) Psyche. It's rare to find books with so many first appearances. While none of these characters have become household names, if one of them becomes a breakout star, this book could explode in value. Even if Disney teases the appearance of one of these characters, this book could jump in value.

That may not happen, but if you're a speculator who wants to buy books before they get hot, this is a great book to buy.

Reason #3: Kevin Feige Can Make the New Mutants Great.

Kevin Feige has a clearly demonstrated track record for transforming run-of-the-mill characters into superstars. Back in 2014, some comic book fans, including myself, had no idea who the Guardians of the Galaxy were; I harbored serious doubt that a film based on this ragamuffin team could be successful. Today, the Guardians of the Galaxy are among the brightest stars in the MCU.

Feige could do the same for the New Mutants. He also has good business reasons to do so. First, the New Mutants contain the diverse cast of characters that Disney seeks to broaden its audiences. Karma is Vietnamese; Psyche is a member of the Cheyenne tribe, and Sunspot is Brazilian.

Second, the New Mutants provide Feige with the perfect set-up for a high school movie. After all, Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters is essentially Hogwarts before there was Hogwarts. The School would provide a perfect setting for a light-hearted high school movie, but with some of our favorite mutants.
