Disney+ - Moon Knight #1

Have you seen the Mandalorian on Disney+ yet?  I would say any episode is better than any Star Wars movie released since the 1980s.  It is engaging, fun, witty, and everything we need in good TV.  I have been cautious about what Disney is planning to do to characters like Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel...but I am here to say I may have been wrong.  If the Marvel Disney+ series are anything like the Mandalorian, we may need to get our speculation butts moving before we miss the boat!

Comics like Moon Knight #1 have been seeing a steady stream of sales, and increasing prices, since the announcement of the Disney+ slate in Phase IV.  9.8 graded copies of Moon Knight #1 have gone from $175 Fair Market Value (FMV) price to an FMV of $280.  Copies have even gone for over $300 on the market, with the newsstand versions getting a slight bump.  Marvel Spotlight #28 has seen a nice increase in value as well, since it has crossed the $1,000 barrier.  She-Hulk #1 has seen an even more pronounced jump.  9.8 graded copies have seen a spike from the $300 range to a steady stream of sales above $400 with copies selling for over $500 at times.  Newsstand variants of She-Hulk also exist but are typically labeled properly during the sale.

All of these books are risky bets for one reason...census.  Each issue is loaded at the high grades and there is always a copy for sale on the market.  This can be a great deal for buyers, but it can mean that any future gains may be fleeting, or at a minimum, you will have competition if you ever try to sell.  That can be a liability if you are not quick with the trends and time sales perfectly.  How long are the gains going to continue to sprint and drift before some of these comics hit value barriers that stop the progress?

Speculation for Disney+ series' are going to be complicated until we see more of what they provide.  The true effect of their popularity may never reach the comic market, but enough people will bet on the action to move comics off the market.  Maybe the fans of a She-Hulk series are more interested in buying hoodies, key-chains, and pogs than collecting her first appearance comic.  No investment is certain over time.

For now, I recommend sticking to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies and their absurd ability to drive character value.  Netflix Marvel series like Daredevil and Punisher had no movement effect on Jigsaw or Bullseye.  I just don't know if Marvel can capture the same magic of the Madalorian every time they drop a series.  Fandom will remain segmented and in the new era of content, that may be the best formula for success.  Stay in your lane, target your audience, and keep them happy while they consume.  We will see if Disney is more daring than I imagine, but as a speculator I win if I am proven wrong!  Any great content that draws attention to comics can help drive up value.

Do you feel like Disney+ will be significant to comic values?  Is there a character you place more potential on?  Drop your comments and join the speculation!
