Resurrected in the comics and with a promise of new movies in the future, the X-Men are mounting a comeback, and these issues have felt the heat from their surge in popularity.

Thanks to Jonathan Hickman, the X-Men have been restored to their former glory in one of the most original interpretations of the mutants in several years. House of X, Powers of X, and the new Dawn of X have dominated sales with its intriguing story that encompasses all of Marvel’s mutants. The re-imagined X-Men and their villains have not only boosted new comic sales, but we are seeing an impact on some older issues as well.

For today’s list, I focused on the minor keys that are climbing the ranks of the Modern Hottest Comics List. If you’ve been looking to invest in some X-titles, these won’t break your budget.

UNCANNY X-MEN #221

The first appearance of Mister Sinister, this comic has been gaining popularity in recent months. My inclination is that this is in part to his importance in Hickman’s House of X. It was already mentioned that he will betray his fellow mutants in the future, and I would be disappointed if he didn’t. In the meantime, it’s great to see him being used in a large capacity once again.

X-FACTOR #6

Like Mister Sinister, Apocalypse has huge implications in the current X-Men run. At the end of House of X, he seemingly put aside his grievances with the X-Men in order to help lead all of mutantkind. However, this is Apocalypse, and it’s only a matter of time before this impressive villain turns against the Quiet Council of Krakoa. Personally, I think Apocalypse ranks alongside Magneto as the X-Men’s greatest threat, so I’m all for him making a “heel turn” and upending the utopian paradise.

UNCANNY X-MEN #282

UXM #282 gave readers their first look at Bishop, the time-traveling mutant bent on preventing a mutant apocalypse by any means necessary. Even after being featured in Fox’s Days of Future Past adaptation, this issue didn’t experience a significant boost. In recent weeks, however, Bishop’s debut has been gaining popularity, and it has risen to number 20 on the hottest modern comics list.

X-MEN VOL. 2 #4

Omega Red may not have the notoriety of Magneto or Sabretooth, but the Russian monster maintains his steady following. Although the 1990s are often criticized for its excess, Omega Red is unabashedly excessive with his hulking, bodybuilder physique and tendrils. It’s that look that has drawn fans to him, and I imagine he will eventually end up on the silver screen slugging it out with Wolverine. In the pages of the Hickman X-Men run, we’ve caught a glimpse of Omega Red, and it’s only a matter of time before he stops playing nice.

UNCANNY X-MEN #244

Ever so quietly, UXM #244 has been gaining value over the past couple of years. Oft mocked for being among the worst X-Men, Jubilee has resurfaced in the current comics and will be an ongoing member of the updated Excalibur. That has helped bump the value for a 9.8 from 2017’s $112 average to a 12-month average of $135.

FINAL THOUGHTS

As a longtime X-Men fan, I love seeing the franchise retake its rightful place atop the Marvel mountain. It’s also great that the comics are bolstering the popularity of older issues instead of it being strictly based on movies and television. However, as I have repeated many times, we haven’t seen anything until the X-Men are officially announced for the MCU.
