The Eternals

It's 2020!  The new year is upon us and we can begin a new cycle of comic book speculation!  I don't think there is anything that can tame the excitement.  We are going to be overwhelmed with Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) offerings that our heads will spin and fly off...wait...hold on a sec...what do you mean I am only going to get Black Widow and The Eternals this year.  Seriously?  Ah, crap.

Since Black Widow is dead and I assume her movie is going to be her force-ghost walking around magically healing people or something worthless like that.  I guess I will focus on The Eternals.  Thankfully, I know very little about The Eternals, so I am pretty much going to have to piece my speculation together from a hobbled mess of Wikipedia, rumor articles, and the like.  I want to help you by sharing this information as both a tool and a warning: know what you speculate!

To me, the concept of The Eternals seems fine, but how is it going to fit into the bigger MCU?  Eternals #1 has been on a hot run since the announcement of the movie and should continue to see gains to the release and beyond.  In the comics, an ancient race known as the Celestials comes to early earth and conducts experiments on early humans.  As a result, two races are created: the Eternals and the Deviants.  The Eternals interact with humans and help protect them from the Deviants.  During a civil war, on their home of Titanos, the Eternals were exposed to high levels of cosmic energy which altered their powers to include manipulation of said energies but sadly destroyed their home.

I am already bored trying to describe this.  In the back of my mind, I keep trying to figure out how the brass at Marvel is going to make this work.  "But Guardians of the Galaxy worked, and nobody knew those characters before that movie was made."  Fine, but that argument does not hold any water because they have a rude raccoon and a baby Groot to entertain folks.   The Eternals sounds like it may be interesting, but I am left wondering why.

My speculation senses are tingling like we are all missing something...or Marvel chose the Eternals because they did not have a mass following of fans, making the Eternals a blank slate for ideas.  If we are traveling to the beginning of the MCU, what could be hiding in the dark reaches of the galaxy?  Galactus is the easy name to throw out.  He is old and powerful, but where did he get his start?  In Guardians of the Galaxy, we were introduced to Knowhere (the head of a Celestial used as a mining base) and appeared to see a Celestial wield the power stone in a flashback.  Are the Celestials, and their role in shaping the universe, the big takeaway from this movie?

The unknown is supposed to be good for a speculator! However, when you are unclear about the background, your possibilities for the future are too numerous or are a bit hazy, you can run the risk of missing spectacularly.  The census numbers for the Eternals books are high, and the market has been flooded with copies since the movie announcement.  2020 may be a year to think beyond the current slate of MCU offerings and figure out where the trail leads from here.

Are you excited about The Eternals movie?  Where is the next logical step for Marvel?  Drop your comments and join the speculation!
