Last month The Eternals #1 hit the top of the Bronze Age charts edging out Secret Wars #8 and Amazing Spider-Man #252. This comic has huge potential to uptick from here. Recently at SDCC, The Eternals movie was confirmed to premiere on November 6th, 2020. This will have an impact on the price of this book as it is still 15 months away. About a year ago The Eternals #1 in grade 9.8 was priced at $865 give or take. Today that same book is going for as high as $1300. That represents roughly a +50% gain in the value of this book. Given additional hype, trailers and media attention will drop this time next year to further boost pricing.

You have a recipe for an other-worldly return probably in the $1950 price range if the comic book continues to increase returns at a +50% clip. Bottom line: The Eternals#1 are going to continue to dominate the rankings and have increased returns well into 2020.

The Eternals#1 (long-term)

  • Grade 9.8 $1050 FMV returns positive +95.3%
  • Grade 9.2 $180 FMV returns positive +43.6%
  • Grade 8.0 $110 FMV returns positive +40.2%
  • Grade 6.0 $75 FMV returns positive +58.3%
  • Grade 4.0 $40 FMV returns positive +321.4%!!!

The long-term returns are solid. This is long overdue for this book and I can remember a time when these were half off in the back issue bins at my local retailer, not too long ago. Currently, they have gained momentum and are commanding a princely sum. The Eternals#1 was created by Jack"King" Kirby and he did both the script and pencils on this comic book. Now the impact of Kirby on comics is ubiquitous and he is one of the greats. But I was never really a huge Eternals fan and neither were almost all of my peers during the 70s and 80s. All the primary superheroes of Marvel yes, but The Eternals I barely remember from back in the day.

Now maybe Disney can make it work but if they follow the pattern of the popularity of the comic book; then this is The Eternals#1 moment in the sun before it is eclipsed by Shang-Chi, Doctor Strange, and Morbius. These movies are all coming out right around the same time frame. After all, the original comic book series only lasted from "July 1976 to January 1978." Then it was shelved and the characters and storyline were left unresolved. "Writers Roy Thomas and Mark Gruenwald used the Eternals in a Thor storyline that climaxed in Thor #301" (Wiki). This book did not exactly breakthrough either as it didn't register even 1.0 on the Richter Scale of popularity. Though Thor #301 did tie up some plot lines for fans.

Interestingly there is an Eternals #1 (30 cent variant) this seems to be the big fish in the Eternal pond. A recent sale in May 2018 of last year produced a $4,950 price for this comic. The FMV is higher at $9,500 let's take a look at some of the returns of this rare variant and see if the Ancient Alien storyline still has some giddyup!

Eternals #1 (30 cent variant)

  • Grade 9.4 $1950 FMV returns positive +50.8%
  • Grade 8.0 $675 FMV returns positive +193%
  • Grade 6.5 $325 FMV returns postive +27.1%
  • Grade 5.5 $300 FMV returns positive +195.6%!!!

The consistent grade of 9.4 prices on average at $1950. That is a full +$1720 above and beyond the regular issue The Eternals#1. Got your goat yet folks? It should by now at least have you dusting off any Eternals comics to confirm if you have the variant or the standard copy of this profitable book. After "mining" your collection for that copy of Eternals #1 (30 cent variant); my suggestion is to sell next summer several months prior to the movie release.
