Frank Herbert's Dune is one of the greatest science-fiction books ever written, and the winner of the science fiction Hugo and Nebula awards.  Over 12 million copies of Dune have sold.  Chilton, a publisher of mainly automobile repair manuals, finally chose to publish Dune, after 20 other publishers rejected the book.

DUNE (2020)

The initial Dune movie trailer was unveiled September 9th along with a Q&A session with the cast hosted by Steven Colbert.  The A-list cast includes Jason Momoa, Timothee Chalamet, Josh Brolin,
Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, and director Denis Villeneuve (Bladerunner 2049 and Arrival).

Warner Bros is planning the release of two movies, and Dune is the first.  Dune will cover material in the first half of the book.  A second, untitled movie will cover the second half of the book.

So, what Dune-related comics are investment-worthy?

DUNE: HOUSE OF ATREIDES  (October 2020)

Boom! Studios released the first issue of this series on October 21, 2020.  Written by Frank Herbert's son, Brian, this prequel's setting is the desert planet Arrakis.  A young man named Leto Atreides (the main character in Dune) joins forces with an eight-year-old slave and the rebellious son of Emperor Elrood.

What is the timing of the release of this comic to the movie and is it worthy of a purchase?

December 18, 2020 is the release date of the movie.  So, we have about a two month gap between the release of issue #1 of this comic and the movie if all goes according to schedule (COVID factor could change that).  This comic can be pre-ordered and will be issued with a Cover A, B, C (die-cut), D (blank), a 1:25 variant by Mora, a 1:50 variant by Lee, and a 1:100 variant by Pope.

This could be an interesting buy and flip.  Issue #1 is definitely worth a look and could pay off if the movie hits big.

Marvel Comics Super Special (Marvel Super Special) #36 (November 1984)

This is the official comic book adaptation of the David Lynch directed 1984 movie, based on Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel.

Ralph Macchio wrote this 68 page, large format magazine-sized comic.  The painted cover and art is by Sienkiewicz.

There have been been very few sales recently.  There was 1 sale at 9.4 for $35 and 1 sale at 9.2 for $49.99.  This is a potentially undervalued issue that isn't seeing much love, but a hit movie could change that.

Dune: The Official Comic Adaptation #1 -3 (March-May 1985)

A few months later, Marvel published a three-issue mini-series that was a reprint of Marvel Comics Super Special #36.

Issue #1 has an FMV of $180 in a 9.8.  The most recent sale was on 6/30/20 which sold for $227.50.  lssue #2 has a recent sale of a 9.8 on 8/15/20 of $199.95, and #3 has a recent sale on 7/8/20 of $135.00 for a 9.8.

This mini-series has the most sales of any Dune comic by far.

THE BOTTOM LINE

  • Dune: House of Atreides #1 - WORTH A LOOK
  • Marvel Comics Super Special #36 - PASS UNLESS YOU THINK THE MOVIE WILL GET HOT
  • Dune: The Official Comic Adaptation #1-3 - FIND #1 AT A GOOD PRICE AND FLIP
