Six months ago, I posted an article recommending ten comics picks to grab for the next ten years. This article is an update on where these picks stand six months later. The way I am calculating returns is by taking the graded book that has the most copies on the GoCollect/CGC census and averaging the first three sales prices in January (Suggested Price) and comparing it to the average of the three most recent sales (Current Price).

Avengers #48 (CGC 9.0)

Given that Marvel pushed back the Eternals to 2021, I was very surprised to see this book return as much as it has over the last six months. I still believe that the Black Knight has a very significant role to play in the future of the MCU beyond just one movie.

Suggested Price = $665
Current Price = $791
Return = 19%

Deadpool #1 (CGC 9.8)

Covid-19 has delayed the forward progress of the MCU and this is no exception for Deadpool. Make no mistake about it, Deadpool is coming. He is far too big (and profitable) a character for Marvel to ignore. Keep an eye out for the newsstand variant of this book. It is a ghost but will be a modern crown jewel one day. Nobody is paying attention to Deadpool right now. It is time to be shopping.

Suggested Price = $129
Current Price = $170
Return = 32%

Venom #3 (3rd Printing) (CGC 9.8)

This book has absolutely exploded in price over the last six months now selling for almost $1,000 in 9.8. This should be a cautionary tale for anybody who does not think late printings can get hot. Knull is set to become a top tier villain in Marvel comics for years to come. There is no movie spec here, just good old-fashioned reader spec. With a limited print-run, this book could continue to climb.

Suggested Price = $82
Current Price = $800
Return = 880%

Amazing Spider-Man #194

Amazing Spider-Man #194 (CGC 9.6)

Black Cat is a staple character of Marvel comics. She has too much potential not to eventually make her way to the big screen. I expect demand for her first appearance to continue to rise over the coming years. Supply of this book is plentiful which may ultimately keep a cap on the price.

Suggested Price = $419
Current Price = $571
Return = 36%

Ultimate Fallout #4 (CGC 9.8)

There is nothing I need to say about this book that has not already been said. I think this book can double from these levels. With a print run in the 70,000 range, this book is by no means overprinted. I still really like the second print with its super low print run of less than 15,000.

Suggested Price = $357
Current Price = $1,152
Return = 222%

Edge of Spider-Verse #2 (CGC 9.8)

This book is destined to follow in the footsteps of Ultimate Fallout #4. It has a smaller print run in the 55,000 range. Keep an eye open for the print error with the black background. If the estimates that there are around 500 of those are correct, this book will hit levels of the UF #4 newsstand variant. I am a big fan of the design variant 3rd printing as well as Spider-Gwen #0 2nd printing. This book has the smallest print run of all the reprints (hint hint).

Suggested Price = $385
Current Price = $872
Return = 126%

Howard the Duck #1 (1:25 Ron Lim Variant) (CGC 9.8)

Gwenpool has more untapped potential than almost any other young Marvel character. This book is so scarce that it has an upside greater than almost any other book on this list. This is not to say that Gwenpool will reach the same level of popularity as other characters on this list.  I think the sketch variant 2nd printing is a really smart play too.

Suggested Price = $319
Current Price = $389
Return = 22%

All-New Marvel Now! Point One #1 (GCG 9.6)

Kamala Khan is on her way to becoming a star for Marvel. She will feature prominently in the new Avengers video game coming out later this year. She is just getting warmed up with TV and movies in her future. This book is the coldest on the list. Do not sleep on the second printing. This is the one book you can pick up cheaper now than when I initially suggested it. This one of the picks I think will show well in the next update.

Suggested Price = $160
Current Price = $98
Return = -39%

Amazing Fantasy #15 (2005) (CGC 9.6)

This book may take some time to play itself out. It saw modest appreciation over the last six months compared to other books on this list. This is one to snatch up and tuck away. Of all the picks on this list, this one will likely surprise us in a future update. Let us wait and see.

Suggested Price = $119
Current Price = $146
Return = 22%

Young Avengers #1 (CGC 9.8)

I recommended picking up this book for Kate Bishop. As most of you know I think big things are coming her way. That said, this book has other things going for it beyond just Kate. Keep an eye open for the Director’s Cut, there are far fewer of those out there.

Suggested Price = $203
Current Price = $263
Return = 30%

Six months in and this list has performed far better than even my wildest expectations. Had you purchased a copy of each book on this list when I posted it would have cost you $2,838. Today those books would be worth $5,252 for a return of 85%. These sorts of gains are not sustainable and they will more likely than not pull back at some point.  Let’s check back in six months for another update on where these picks stand. Thanks for reading.
