James Tynion IV will write the new Sandman series, THE SANDMAN UNIVERSE: NIGHTMARE COUNTRY, starting this April.

The press release follows:

Media Release -- DC is inviting Sandman fans to face their nightmares in the newest ongoing Black Label comic series: The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country.

The Corinthian walks the Earth again.

One of Dream's greatest nightmares, and a proven serial killer when set free in the past, letting him loose on the world is a dangerous choice… but a necessary one, because there is another nightmare walking America that was not born in the Dreaming—a monster that Dream, lord of all nightmares, did not make. What follows is a dark cat and mouse game, a net of nightmares that catches not just dreams but the people who dream them, in a journey that crosses all the most terrifying corners of America: the collections of True Crime aficionados, white supremacist militia camps, galleries specializing in the art of horror, and more.

The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country is a terrifying travelogue through a nation both recognizable and obscene, which will show you things seen in no Sandman series ever before. Horror-comics superstar James Tynion IV (The Nice House on the Lake, Something Is Killing the Children) is joined by artist Lisandro Estherren (Redneck, Strange Skies Over East Berlin), whose work on the horror series Redneck has been described as "gritty, nasty, unsettling, and all at once, gorgeous," and he brings that kinetic energy to Nightmare Country. Although it's set in an America that is worryingly familiar, each issue will divert into a nightmare drawn by a guest artist, starting with the incredible Yanick Paquette (Swamp Thing, Wonder Woman) on Issue #1.

"The Sandman is the series that made me want to become a comic book writer," says Tynion. "Growing up, I loved reading the comics about costumed heroes and villains, but the stories that I kept wanting to put to paper lived in many genres, and I had convinced myself that the only place you could get away with that was in prose. It wasn't until early high school when I got my hands on the first volumes of Sandman that I saw the immensity of what was possible in a comic book, and I became determined to spend my life making comics."

The series also introduces two terrifying new characters to the Sandman Universe: Mr. Agony and Mr. Ecstasy, a deadly duo of killers slipping along after the Corinthian's quarry, killing anyone in their path—including, if they can, a certain toothy nightmare.

With the smash success of Audible's audio adaptation, and the upcoming blockbuster Netflix streaming series, 2022 is officially the year of The Sandman – and this can't-miss horror series has been built to welcome new fans into the world of the comics. Issue #1 is on sale April 12, 2022; until then, fans can get caught up on all things Sandman on DC UNIVERSE INFINITE, and can also check out Volume One of Tynion's smash hit Nice House on the Lake, on sale March 1, 2022.
