With the recent announcement of Static Shock leading the charge of a revamped DCEU event, you can be sure the keys are getting some friction. Let's look at a few.

A Static Shock movie has been confirmed with Michael B. Jordan set to produce (known for his role as Killmonger in Black Panther, as well as his excellent performances in Fruitvale Station and Creed). This is a welcome opportunity to not only bring another beloved character to the big screen (or streaming screen) but also opens up a possible Milestone Comics Universe centered around expanding the demographics represented in comics (and their movies).

This is all good news. I remember Static Shock as one of the must-watch superhero shows as a kid and am so glad to see that world come to the big screen. To be clear, I'm not a Static aficionado by any means. I've started checking out some of the keys and am happy to see them already climbing in value.

Static #1 - Collector's Edition

This seems to be the most common print of Static #1 and was originally poly-bagged as a "Collector's Edition" in true 90's comic fashion. But, gimmick or not, Static #1 Collector's Edition is pulling some coin with a current 9.8 FMV going for $300. Currently, there isn't much difference between the Collector's Edition and the Platinum Edition (pictured at left) of the first issue (Current 9.8 FMV on Platinum Ed going for $290) so it's a safe bet to have either one of these. I just don't see how this could be dropping any time soon.

Static #1 - Newsstand Edition

Back in the '90s, newsstand meant something. It meant smaller print runs compared to the direct edition copies. It also meant fewer high grade copies on the market. (Newsstand copies never receive the same love and care our trusted LCS owners provide.) That's good and bad news. It means these books are rare, but it also means they're more valuable. The current 9.8 FMV on a Newsstand Variant commands a cool $400, but you can expect that to go up for what is clearly the better cover of the three #1 options (aesthetically speaking). Raw copies of variable grades can range from $50 to $250 on the interwebs.

Static #45 - Last Issue and Moebius Cover

If you've read my posts on GoCollect, you know I love Moebius; I'll always look for an opportunity to share his work to the masses. (If you want to read more about Moebius, you can check out those posts here and here.) Anyway, Static's final issue, with a beautiful cover drawn by the master Jean Giraud (Moebius) is the only other Static comic with a 9.8 FMV over a $100. And it's quite a bit beyond that mark with a Static #45 current 9.8 FMV of $375. In the six months since I wrote an article detailing Moebius' cover work, Static #45 has jumped $50. Not bad. But if you take a single search on eBay, you will see the massive price tag sellers are expecting on this book. 9.2s to 9.8s are all hovering around the $1000 range.

Potential

The potential is there. I think it's a great move for this segment of the DCEU to be disconnected to the rest; that gives this movie a real fighting chance without having to tie in to other things happening. It can be what it's supposed to be. Now, if the film's a hit, you can expect these numbers to blast off to the stratosphere. And even if it's a total bust, these books still represent a milestone (pun intended) in the comics medium as the beginning of inclusion for diverse characters and creators. You can't go wrong.
