Out of the nine upcoming Disney+ television series, the one with the most familiar territory and characters is Obi-Wan Kenobi which starts filming in early 2021.  Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen make a return to the franchise in this new series.  McGregor has hinted that in the show, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi will again face his greatest failure, the corruption of his friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.   The series is set 10 years after the events of: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, and will consist of six one-hour episodes.

So, what are some spec possibilities for this series?

Star Wars #2 (1977)

Obi-Wan "Ben" Kenobi's first comic book appearance is in the second issue of Marvel's 1977 Star Wars series.  He makes the cover, he has a dark pink lightsaber, he teams up with Luke Skywalker to rescue Princess Leia from Darth Vader and save the galaxy.  Once a great Jedi Knight, Ben Kenobi debuts in this issue advanced in years but still feisty.

This issue is also the first comic book appearances of Hans Solo, Chewbacca, and the lightsaber (referred to in this issue as a lightsabre).   Fun trivia: Though the cover art of the cantina brawl depicts it, never does Luke use a blaster or encourage Ben to fight in comics or in the movies.

What are the numbers and possibilities with this key issue?

The current FMV of a 9.8 graded Star Wars #2 is $3300.  Stop.  Let's put that into perspective.  This issue was hovering around a little over $400 in 2019.  Then, bring on the nuclear comic market, nuclear Star Wars, and the great Sell-Off of 2020 and 2021, and you have $3300 for an FMV.  Most of the higher-priced issues in this series have a drop-off-the-cliff price for lower grades.  For example, currently, you can pick up a Star Wars #2 in a graded 9.0 for an FMV of $290.

Star Wars: Purge (One-shot)

This book is key for lots of reasons: You have the backdrop of Order 66 and Sith vs. Jedi action, Darth Vader front and center, an Adam Hughes cover, and rumors that there could be a connection with Grogu's origin in the issue.  So, lots of possibilities here that are definitely intriguing.

This issue has been a rollercoaster as far as value is concerned.  Back 10-12 years ago, this issue had some heat which then faded.  The last couple of recent sales were $250 for a graded 9.8 and $100 for a graded 9.6.

Star Wars: Kanan #8

Since Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor are coming back for the new show, this issue is important because it has some overlap to the fight between Jedi Master Obi-Wan and Anakin.  This throw-down on the planet Mustafar in the Outer Rim happens in the Mustafarian Mining Complex and is epic!   Darth Vader ends up being severely wounded in the duel and needs a cybernetic suit of armor from that point on.

A 9.8 graded copy of Star Wars: Kanan #8 goes for a low $40 currently on limited sales.  This issue features the first appearance of Cin Drallig.

Take-aways:

  • Star Wars #2:  I think this key issue is currently overvalued.  As it stands right now--PASS.
  • Star Wars: Purge:  This issue has too much going for it to stay where it is in value--BUY.
  • Star Wars: Kanan #8:  I think this issue has been overlooked with issues #1, #6, and #12 of the Kanan series getting all the attention, get it cheap now--BUY.
