A Droid Story is an animated adventure television series featuring C-3PO and R2-D2 produced by Lucasfilms. The series introduces a brand new hero whose guides are the two droids on a secret mission. George Lucas has stated in the past how he wanted to do this sort of series featuring droids. There is not a whole lot of information about the project, but we can speculate on which comics could be relevant. So, here are some comics based on rumors featuring C-3PO and R2-D2 for your considerations. (I have not included the first two appearances of C-3PO and R2-D2 in the original Star Wars Marvel series in Issue #1 and Issue #2 in this list)
Droids #1 (1986) Marvel/Star
This series was released along with the first Star Wars Droids animated television series, which was a spin-off of the original Star Wars trilogy. C-3PO and R2-D2 face off against criminals, bounty hunters, pirates, and the Galactic Empire in the service of successive new masters. Each issue features C-3PO and R2-D2 being assigned to a new master and adventures ensue!
Droids #1 currently has a 9.8 FMV of $110 with the last two sales trending higher than that. With 25+ sales, this is definitely on people’s radar. Like most Star Wars comics, this one has been growing in value recently.
Star Wars: Droids #1 (1994) Dark Horse
The setting of this series is before Star Wars: A New Hope and the formation of the Empire. Star Wars: Droids is set in the Kalarba system. The series ran six issues and issue #1 features a great cover of C-3PO and R2-D2.
The current 9.8 FMV of Droids #1 is $70. The last recorded sale was over $100. The other issues in the series have low FMVs.
Newly deputized C-3PO and R2-D2 travel to Nar Shaddaa to arrest Olag Greck, a con-man and criminal. The series follows the two badge-wearing droids as they chase criminals. These comics featured three stories in each issue. This third series ran eight issues.
Currently, the 9.8 FMV of Droids #1 is $95 with 3 recent sales. There’s not a lot of sales of this series.
Dark Horse Comics #17-19 (1994)
These three issues were Dark Horse’s first droids stories before the solo Dark Horse series. Each comic issue featured three story arcs. The story arc in issues #17, #18, & #19, “Droids” was Dark Horse Comics’ first C-3PO and R2-D2 stories. The droids are caught between Olag, a ruthless trader, and the deadly battle droid, IG-88.
Of the three issues, only issue #18 has an established 9.8 FMV, which is $34. The other issues are available raw for cheap. Only issue #18 features the droids on the cover, however.
The Protocol Offensive #1 (1997) Dark Horse
Here’s a final long-shot possibility. This one-shot prestige issue was co-written by Anthony Daniels, the actor who played C-3PO in the Star Wars movies, with the Star Wars novelist Brian Daley, and Rider Windham. It features C-3PO and R2-D2 saving the planet Talhboor, in an adventure set before Star Wars: A New Hope.
The issue does not have an established FMV.
A Droid Story will introduce some new characters which will be spec possibilities. Everything is unclear at this point. When we find out more details, forewarned is prepared. I’d start now keeping an eye out for these issues in back bins for cheap. Low risk, maybe high reward!

Wait. Oh my! What have you done? I’m backwards, you filthy furball–C-3PO
