In October,  Marvel Cinematic Universe fans were treated to a fairly substantial piece of information from Natalie Portman when she was asked about the plot for the upcoming MCU movie Thor: Love & Thunder.

Despite saying that she "can't tell you that much," she disclosed that "it's based on the graphic novel of The Mighty Thor. She's going through cancer treatment and is a superhero on the side." That is a major piece of information if you ask me, and gives us a clear path to what issues we should be seeking to invest in before the move hits theaters in 2022.

With source material ammunition in hand, Jane Foster keys are very affordable as we approach the end of 2020, making now is the time to buy as others are focused on the latest breaking Black Panther 2, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and Black Widow news.

What are some keys to focus on moving into 2021? Let's take a look.

What If...? #10

After Natalie Portman was announced to be returning not only as Jane Foster, but Jane Foster as Thor, What If...? #10 was the hot issue to own. It doesn't represent the canonical version of Jane Foster's Thor which is explored below, but rather Foster as Thordis.

In the issue, she finds Mjolnir and assists Asgard with a variety of threats. Eventually, this leads her to be named a goddess. At the time of publishing (1978), it was thought of as an interesting one-off concept. Nothing that would lead to an official movement of Foster becoming Thor. Clearly, that changed a few decades later. What was once a book that was auctioned off under $300 in a CGC 9.8 in 2016, became a book with a fair market value of over $1,000 by the middle of 2020.

But in the past six months, eight of 13 CGC grades have seen a decline in market value. This is due to the news of Jane Foster moving to the backburner. CGC 9.4 copies that routinely went for over $200 this summer have most recently auctioned for $180 and $160 on eBay. That makes this the perfect time to invest.

Thor #1

Commonly thought of as the first appearance of Jane Foster as Thor (There is a cameo, a first appearance, and a first full appearance. Don't get me started.), this Thor #1 modern key looks more and more like it will be part of the source material for the movie in a couple years.

In this kickoff to Volume 4 of the Thor series of comics, Foster is able to pick up Mjolnir after Thor has struggled with being worthy of wielding it after a battle with Nick Fury. After Avengers: Endgame, we know this is not likely to happen. So, there must be some other fulcrum that allows Foster to first have the opportunity and the worthiness of wielding the hammer. All likely to be explained in the plot of the movie.

This being a modern key, CGC 9.8 copies are VERY affordable, with most recent sales all falling under $175.

Thor #2

Thor #2 shows us Jane Foster in action as Thor for the first time and is commonly known to be her first full appearance as the character. Our good friends the Frost Giants are back to terrorize the planet and Thor must battle those mystic creatures while also trying to ascertain the actions and intentions of the evil Roxxon Corporation.

Roxxon Corporation is long established in the MCU, appearing in each of the Iron Man movies as well as Agent Carter, Agents of SHIELD, and even an episode of Daredevil, so we shouldn't be surprised if somehow it factors into a story in this upcoming movie. Perhaps something produced or discovered by Roxxon has certain side effects that leads to Foster's cancer? Time will tell.

What few CGC 9.8 copies that exist of this issue are selling for about $60. It's probably be best to find a near mint raw copy and see if any news comes out that causes the value to rise.

Thor #8

Thor #8 is full of revelations to the reader, the most powerful of which comes on the last page when we discover that Jane Foster is battling a form of cancer that is killing her whenever she removes the armor and hammer that give her the god-like power.

This short run of Volume 4 ends after this issue. We don't see the ramifications of this cancer diagnosis until the next volume. The conflict becomes clear in this issue when Foster says,  "The world needs a Thor. That's all that really matters. We need a God who understands what it means to be humbled. To be mortal. A God who knows how precious life is. How delicate. A God who struggles everyday to live a worthy life. Who suffers so that no one else will have to. A God who loves the Earth enough to die for it." Foreshadowing, much?

She is living inside a tense struggle. She is balancing the necessary power she has with the thought that these powers are all that are keeping her alive.

Assuredly a reaction to the news from Portman, CGC copies in a 9.8 grade of this issue have been selling for over $100 since early October. They were at a mark of $70-$80 just a couple months prior. This provides some actionable data for investors. If the book cools back down over 2021, it is a strong buy as it is likely to see another spike as plot and productions details leak.

Mighty Thor #705

The death of Jane Foster's Thor.

In Marvel's attempt to bring back continuity in some of it's oldest titles, after Mighty Thor Volume 2 #23, the series was relaunched back to Volume 1 #700 with a six-issue story arc titled "Death of the Mighty Thor." Mighty Thor #705 is the culmination of that arc and shows Foster sacrificing Mjolnir - and also herself - to save Asgardia from Mangog.

The ending is quite an emotional punch with Jane Foster dying in the arms of Thor. She passed after Asgardians realize what she did to save all of them. One might say it's the stuff movies are made of.

The market hasn't quite jumped on this book yet. The latest CGC 9.8 copy selling in early November for only $41; essentially less than it would cost to get the book graded and shipped. If we get any news at all about a potential Thor death in the MCU, jump on this book quickly. Then admire the beautiful cover and interior art along the way.

What Happens to Jane Foster After Love and Thunder?

From what we know about Chris Hemsworth's contract with Disney, he is scheduled to appear in Thor: Love and Thunder and then have some sort of role in the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie. After that, the future is far less clear. If the MCU is prepping to introduce a cancer storyline, could it be possible that the "death" of one of the Thors is also in the cards?

This is purely speculation, of course. Might it be a fitting way to end Hemsworth's time with Disney if, in a moment of self-sacrifice, he was able to somehow spare Jane Foster from her cancer, meaning it would cost him his own life? The mantle of Thor could then officially be passed to Natalie Portman for future projects.

Or Disney could just sign Hemsworth to another contract and follow the source material to the letter, allowing Jane Foster to die. Or the pair of Thors battle alongside each other for the foreseeable future. That's probably what we all want anyways.

What about you? Where do you see Jane Foster and the future of Thor headed? Let me know in the comments!
