Silver SurferWith the speculation heating up, 2020 is proving to be an impressive year for Silver Surfer #4 as almost every grade has set new record values.

At first glance, it may appear that Silver Surfer #4 is on the decline. As of July 20, it had fallen 38 positions on the Silver Age's Hottest Comics index. It has fallen outside the top 50, and now it is nestled in the 54th position. At this pace, it will be clinging to the top 100 in a matter of months. However, that only tells part of the story.

Silver SurferTHE RECORD-BREAKING YEAR FOR SILVER SURFER

So far in 2020, there have been 18 different grades that have traded hands online. Of those, all but five have reached new records, and those still have more than five months to reach their potential.

Why is S.S. #4 doing so well? First of all, this is an iconic John Buscema cover featuring two of Marvel's most famous characters, Thor and Silver Surfer. The other part of the equation is Disney's Fox purchase from last year. With the anticipation for the Surfer to reach the MCU and Thor further exploring the big-screen cosmos, fans can assume that these two will meet in epic fashion.

With so many grades setting new records, let's break down the data.

THE HIGH GRADES

As I said, the sales volume only tells part of the tale. Take the graded 9.2. Certainly, the $1,910 three-month FMV is a dip compared to the 12-month $2,060 average. However, the last sale was for $2,160, and that was after it reached a record-high of $2,280 at the end of March. Then we have the 9.6, which reached a new high of $7,200 on April 20.

Although there has only been one 9.4 that has sold in 2020, its $3,000 price tag set a new record, while the 9.0 hit a record of $2,099 on March 2.

The near-mints are not the only grades setting record numbers in 2020. The 8.5 made its mark with a $1,415 sale on June 4. Prior to that, the 8.0 struck gold with a $1,332 sale on April 9.

MID-GRADE ALL-STARS

The trend continues into the mid-grades, beginning with the 7.5. That particular grade actually surpassed its previous high twice this year. First, it sold for $875 on May 3. A month later, a copy surpassed that with a $900 sale on June 21. Next is the 7.0 that forged new territory with an $875 sale last month.

Last year, the 6.5 broke records of its own, but it didn't stop there. On June 7, one sold for a new record $610.

LOW-GRADE SILVER SURFER GOODNESS

As we move down the proverbial ladder, the trend continues into the lower grades. Back in May, a 4.0 copy sold for $400, besting the previous high from a year ago by nearly $50. Even the 3.0 is doing well as its 2020 high sale of $284 is approaching 2018's record $300.

Getting to the lowest of the lows, the 2.5 saw a record high in 2018 when a copy brought $195. That number was eclipsed with a $250 sale in March of this year. More impressive is the 2.0, which rocketed past its previous mark of $60 from 2010 when it reached $200 on April 1.

It doesn't stop until we reach the bottom of the barrel. The 1.5 had never sold for more than $47 in 2016. On May 21, that figure was obliterated by a $160 sale.
