The comic market can be a fickle beast, but if you bought these five issues a year ago, you are getting serious bang for your buck.

AVENGERS #47 & #48

A year ago, this was a sleeper issue, but ever since the Black Knight was confirmed for The Eternals movie, the first two appearances of Dane Whitman have been rocketing through the market. With Kit Harrington announced to portray him on the screen, collectors were even more determined to add these issues to their sets. A year ago, an Avengers #47 at a graded 8.5 would have cost you $85 on average, but last month, one sold for $799. Of course, Avengers #48 has been even more impressive. Last year, a graded 9.0 averaged $166. Over the past 90 days, it has averaged $955, and one brought $800 just last month.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #37

The collecting world has an on-again, off-again relationship with Norman Osborn. At the beginning of the summer, as rumors swirled that Norman was going to be the featured villain in Captain Marvel 2 and a possible Dark Avengers movie, this issue was red hot. Then Sony and Disney briefly parted ways, and it looked like Norman would not be appearing in the MCU. That led to many collectors abandoning ship on his key issues. Lo and behold, Sony and Disney reached a new agreement, and the Norman Osborn/MCU speculation has been renewed. While values overall are still up for this issue compared to a year ago, the sale prices have been on the decline for many grades. Still, I wouldn’t jump ship quite yet. One way or another, I suspect we’ll see Norman on the big screen once again.

FANTASTIC FOUR #55

As I previously wrote in "Stay Gold, Surfer Boy," all things Silver Surfer has been on fire this year. Ever since Disney finalized the purchase of Fox, fans are awaiting the word on when the Fantastic Four will be joining the MCU. With the F.F. world of characters comes two who arguably have since surpassed Marvel’s first family’s popularity: the Silver Surfer and Galactus. That leaves collectors scrambling for any and all of the Surfer’s key appearances. This issue marked the first time that the Surfer and Thing were matched against each other, and it is Surfer’s fourth overall appearance. Since November, values for F.F. #55 have been on the rise. For instance, there’s the graded 9.0, which sold for $300 earlier this month after holding in the $250 range for years.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #86

There’s no surprise that this issue is gaining value. With the first Black Widow trailer having dropped, collectors are gunning for ASM #86, which features Natasha Romanoff’s origin story. While origin issues are not as coveted as first appearances, that makes them cheaper alternatives, and that’s what is fueling the speculation for this particular comic. After all, Black Widow’s first appearance in Tales of Suspense #52 is out of reach for many, and this is the next best option. Several grades are gaining value, so don’t wait too long if you want a copy of your own. The graded 8.0, for one, was a $93 comic in 2017, but its 12-month average has ballooned to $160.
