He is a dark knight. His detective skills and proficiency in unarmed combat are exceptional. No, I am not talking about Batman; try Marvel's version of a dark knight, the one and only Moon Knight. Everyone is going after Moon Knight #1 the first volume, but where does that leave Moon Knight #1 (Vol. 2)? This comic has both the origin story of the Moon Knight revealed plus a new fangled costume. Is the dark knight of Marvel underpriced? Could now be the time for folks to load up on Moon Knight?

The scuttlebutt in Hollywood is that several big-name writers are chomping at the bit to produce this movie. Think of it, Marvel finally gets a dark knight of their own. Moonie has made folks lots of money, but is there a possible lift from here? Sure, these prices are pure speculation without a solid catalyst, currently, all we have is the possibility of one. However, watch  Moon Knight #1 (Vol. 2) turn into an E-ticket ride at Disney with the added juice of a real catalyst. The question is will it be the boring Log Jam ride (that just gets you wet) or the Matterhorn (which takes you up into a mountain of profit)?

Moon Knight #1 (Vol. 2)

I recently purchased a 9.8 graded copy of  Moon Knight #1 (Vol. 2) on the cheap during a retail sale. It seemed like a good way to buy into the Moon Knight saga. When the sale became apparent it was an obvious purchase. Sure in the raw format it is cheaper. Will I be guaranteed a grade 9.8 on my raw copy if I send it in? No. If you can pick one up and purchase it for the price of a CGC slabbing and grading; then do so. The old saying, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" was never truer than when referring to CGC grading. Will this book be the favored of Konshu, or is it just another false prophet? What do the numbers say?

Long-Term Return:

  • Grade 9.8 $80 FMV returns positive +30.1%
  • Grade 9.6 $40 FMV returns positive +11.7%
  • Grade 9.4 $30 FMV returns negative -11%
  • Grade 9.2 $28 FMV returns negative -2.8%

As you can see probably better to stay in the two higher grades. It will be some time until the lower grades catch up. Do not go below a 9.2 near mint minus, or Konshu will punish you. Still, a +30.1% return is no "yoke" at this level. Please tell me where you can make +30% on s speculation with $80? There are three places you might get lucky and they are all big gambles: the ponies, the poker table, or the pink sheets. Every one of these is such a long shot you will make me shed Crocodile tears for any savvy speculator that try them. Perhaps we should check on Moon Knight #1 (Vol. 2) and the short-term results?

Short-Term Return (last 6-months):

  • Grade 9.8 $80 FMV returns positive +23.3%
  • Grade 9.6 $40 FMV returns positive N/A
  • Grade 9.4 $30 FMV returns positive N/A
  • Grade 9.2 $28 FMV returns negative -44.5% (not conclusive as this is only 2 sales).

The short-term results are definitely encouraging. This shows an upward trend for a minor key. The near mint to mint grade 9.8 has great numbers and is the place to put your bet down on this aspect of Moon Knight. After all, Marvel needs a dark knight too!

Another good bet on a minor key for Moon Knight is Werewolf by Night #33 the second appearance of Moon Knight. It is a "supernatural slug-fest you dare not miss!" This book was written by Doug Moench with pencils by Gil Kane and Don Perlin in the summer of 1975. Is this book utter Moon madness to invest in or a sound purchase?

Long-Term Return:

  • Grade 9.8 $2900 FMV returns positive N/A
  • Grade 9.2 $230 FMV returns positive +24.2%
  • Grade 8.0 $110 FMV returns positive +17.8%
  • Grade 6.5 $75 FMV returns positive +22.9%

Werewolf by Night #33 definitely has some bite left in it and will get you to howl at the Moon if you purchase it. Don't be afraid to purchase in the lower grades, since they still have room to run up. If the right team takes control of the Moon Knight saga; then ole' Moonie could bring us "the sun, the moon, and the stars" of speculative returns.
