Reading is fundamental. Read what you like; don’t waste your time reading bad comics out of habit!

My weekly look at select comic books being released Wednesday, 5/2/07. The full shipping list, as always, is available at ComicList.

[NOTE: Not all of these titles will actually arrive in all stores. If your LCBS offers a pre-ordering service, be sure to take advantage of it. If not, find another one; or try Khepri.com or MidtownComics.com]

PICK OF THE WEEK

Star Wars: Legacy Volume 1 TPB - Broken

ABRAMS
Diary Of A Wimpy Kid SC, $12.95
Graffiti La Street Styles And Art HC, $35.00

Both of these look interesting, continuing Diamond’s recent stretching of the definition of “comics” as Wimpy Kid is a collected webcomic that is more of an illustrated “novel” while Graffiti is a coffee table art book. Both seem worth a peek, though.

ADHOUSE BOOKS
Ancient Book Of Myth And War HC, $19.95

AdHouse, in partnership with Scott Morse’s Red Window, goes the coffee table route with an intriguing collection of “experiments in color, shape, line and composition enrich[ing] each and every page, accompanied by text that will enlighten the audience with atmospheric facts concerning origins, eras, and even media used in the production of the art itself.” Contributors include Morse, Lou Romano, Don Shank and Nate Wragg. Check out Morse’s PW interview for info and pictures.

DARK HORSE COMICS
Star Wars Legacy Vol 1 Broken TPB, $17.95

When I really like a comic book, I’ll buy the TPB even though I already have the floppies, and I really like Legacy.

DC COMICS
52 Week #52, $2.50
Detective Comics #832, $2.99
Jonah Hex #19, $2.99

Detective Comics #832

52 Week #52

52 ends, and with it, the Countdown to Dan Didio being fired begins! Remember, I have first quarter 2008 in the office pool. *** It’s officially One Year Later in the DCU this week and I’m buying considerably fewer DC comics these days. Coincidence? Most of what I’m still buying is either Batman-related (me, sucker), or comfortably removed from the DCU (ie: Jonah Hex and Blue Beetle).

DEVILS DUE PUBLISHING
GI Joe Americas Elite #23, $3.50

Don’t hate. Appreciate.

IMAGE COMICS
Strange Girl #16, $3.50

How much longer can this series possibly last? I’m enjoying it, but I feel like I’m a member of a very small and relatively silent cult. :-(

MARVEL COMICS
All New Official Handbook To The Marvel Universe A To Z Update #2, $3.99
Avengers Initiative #2 CWI, $2.99
Incredible Hulk #106, $2.99
Thunderbolts Presents Zemo Born Better #4 (Of 4), $2.99
World War Hulk Prologue World Breaker, $3.99

World War Hulk Prologue World Breaker

Thunderbolts Presents Zemo Born Better #4

All New Official Handbook To The Marvel Universe A To Z Update #2

If you had told me a year ago that my Marvel pulls would be dramatically slashed and that the Hulk would be one of the primary highlights remaining on it, I’d have laughed at you. And yet, here we are. Crazy!

NASCAR COMICS
Nascar Heroes #1, $3.95

Admit it, much like watching NASCAR on TV, you’re as curious as I am about whether this will crash and burn. Vegas odds are 3:2.
