Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Star Wars Legacy #18
Dark Horse Comics
Ostrander, Duursema & Parsons

Part 5 of the Claws of the Dragon story doesn’t disappoint, unless you count how long it has taken for the issue to come out. Now that I got that off my chest I can continue the review and rave about this issue. To summarize, Cade flips on the Sith. Shocking, I know, but it was excellent.

The issue starts off with Darth Krayt torturing Cade with some Vong and explaining to him how it’s all a necessary part of him using the dark side of the force. While explaining the remaining pieces of Hett’s transformation into Darth Krayt he emphasizes over and over again how, at the time, he thought he was only pretending to be a Sith, just to use the power. Much like what Cade is doing now, eh?

Krayt tells Cade how he had been tied up in Sith training longer than he thought and when he emerged Vader and Palpatine were dead. It seemed a little convenient, but whatever, it’s a big galaxy. Krayt also explains when he encountered the Vong, he met up with another rogue Jedi, Vergere. Vergere is a character known from the novels and seems to be quite a slippery one. Over time, Krayt began to see the strength in the Sith and the vision of his Sith. Before you know it, Krayt is done telling his story to Cade. It’s got a lot of good stuff in there and provides a very complete story of his whereabouts for the past 125 years or so. It even explains where his bionic hand went and why his eyes don’t match.

Cade explains to Krayt that he can’t heal him from the Vong infection. He needs more time to study Krayt’s insides. This buys Cade time to escape. He does this and is caught by his Sith girlfriend.

Krayt wants Cade to kill the Jedi he went into the Sith temple to rescue in the first place, Hosk. Cade wont do it and knows that Krayt needs Cade alive to do the healing. Eventually Hosk outsmarts Krayt and get him mad enough to have Krayt kill him himself. Hosk disappears into the force, further enraging Krayt. Cade then sees the vision of his father. This gives him the strength he needed to take up his father’s lightsaber and start hacking. Basically do exactly what Krayt wanted him to do. Kind of tricky those Sith, eh?

We are left with one Sith down, one Jedi dead and one Sith about to be executed by Cade with Krayt watching gleefully. All this, while Cade’s mom and his buddies are flying into the temple to rescue him.

A fantastic issue. I can’t go on enough about the story, the art, the dialog, the action. It’s all great. Cade’s eye color alone and how it changes is noteworthy among the art. Just pick up the issue and thumb through the lightsaber duel. It’s fabulous artistically.

The story has been great all along. The inclusion of characters from the previous comic series incarnations are great ideas. The usage of the dead Jedi ghosts are equally as clever. The layout of how Krayt is turning and manipulating Cade is excellent. It’s a great arc in a very excellent comic. It’s so worth checking out.

My one question about this arc is: where is R2? I know he’s out there and ready to spring something up.

5 out of 5 geek goggles.
