Frank Frazetta's Death Dealer #6 of 6
Image Comics
Jones, Fotos & Ortega

The closing issue of this mini series brings more fantastic art and a satisfactory conclusion to the story threads. While I can’t claim to really have connected with any one character or even to have fully understood all the character’s interactions, I did enjoy the demons and the battles. In short, I was entertained and enjoyed this issue as much as any of the others in this series.

This story has three plots all coming to a close with two colliding directly with one another. For starters we have the Death Dealer versus the Mirahan. Words can’t describe this Mirahan thing, but it’s big, dark and nasty looking. It dwarfs the Dealer. The Dealer isn’t afraid and charges in with reckless abandonment.

Rian Atar makes his way to the King’s castle to find it under siege. Rian and his men do their best to help in the fight against the demons. While this is going on Adelia Atar, Lambeau, Kelland and Dreovid fight some demons near where the Death Dealer is. Now, I cant tell demon apart from demon which made the scenery switch here a little difficult to follow, but I’m not even sure it matters.

The three battles all take somewhat different turns. The Rian Atar/King battle is going downhill quickly. They are outnumbered and don’t stand a chance against the demons. The Death Dealer holds his own against Mirahan, but he is taking a pounding. But Adelia and Lambeau break through the demons to enter the layer of Mirahan. Dreovid isn’t feeling well, so he sits it out with Kelland.

Just as the Rian Atar/King battle is many against about three, the Death Dealer gets a surge of courage from his former girlfriend, Adelia, and in a Rocky Balboa moment, he destroys Mirahan using his shield. Apparently he either turned his shield into a weapon or he used his shield to reverse Mirahan’s power. In either case, Mirahan perishes. But so does the Death Dealer. Rian and the King are saved, but not too many others. Apparently Mirahan was controlling all the demons and when he bought the farm, so did the demons.

In the end, we learn that the boyfriend of Adelia died with the Death Dealer. Also, Dreovid decides to take young Kelland under his wing.

Not quite a happy ending, but a good one. This is a dark story and I wouldn’t expect everyone to come out in one piece. I was pleased to see that death was handed out on all sides.

This secret to this story was its artwork. It’s amazing. Sure, I had a hard time figuring it all out, but this comic is loaded with dark images and ugly demons. It’s got everything you need to create a tale that just screams out horror. As I have said before, this comic would have been just as good done as a narration with no real character interaction. The only character I even remotely cared about was Adelia and that was because she witnessed her boyfriend become the Death Dealer essentially.

In all, this comic is a treat to the eyes. If you like hacking, sword and sorcery and anything by Frank Frazetta then I encourage you to check this out.
