Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Hulk #3
Marvel Comics
Loeb, McGuinness, Vines & Keith

Red, Blue and two shades of Green battle it out. Two shades of Green? Well, maybe only one battles, but the other shows up (wink, wink). This issue accelerates this series. Three issues in and we have a slew of characters and plenty of beatdowns. What’s not to like?

Red Hulk battles Blue Abomination. Red Hulk talks an awful lot of trash for a character who didn’t speak much two issues ago. We know Rick Jones is the Blue A-Bomb but who is the Red Hulk?

Iron Man assesses the damage to the helicarrier. In the process, we learn that Doc Samson, General Ross and Agent Quartermain are missing. When was the last time we saw Samson again? To add some spice to the mix a video reveals that Banner whispered something to Ross in his last visit to Banner. What does this mean? Maybe he was saying “he loves you”.

While Red and Blue battle it out they happen to crash the gate in the arena where Banner is. The Red Hulk happens to get a retina scan and he passes. How is this possible? Ross and Samson have clearance. When did we last see Samson again?

Red and Blue trigger the base’s defense systems and that releases some green robot Harpies. They are not a match for the two monsters. With all this shaking the cell that holds Banner way below the surface gets cracked. Someone gets angry.

This issue is excellent. Again, we don’t know who the Red Hulk is, but it doesn’t hinder the story at all. The issue moves along at top speed and uses a nice mix of action and plot to keep things fresh.

For me, the highlight with the artwork is the use of color. The Green, Blue and Red shades used for the characters are all excellent choices. It really captures the modes of the characters.

I realize I’m in the tank for the Hulk, but this story is really a well told tale with action and mystery. Nothing about this issue feels like a slow burn. It has the cliffhanger ending down cold at this point. Sure, the giants beating on each other cant go on forever and at some point we will need to find out how Rick turned into the Blue Abomination and who and how the Red Hulk came about. For now, just enjoy the beatings.

5 out of 5 geek goggles.
