Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Green Arrow & Black Canary #7
DC Comics
Winick & Chiang (with Norton)

I’m digging this series. Every issue has some humor, some fighting, some mystery and a cliffhanger. This issue gives us a couple of new characters to play with and a new artist. There are a few oddities with the story telling, but I’m thinking something is in the works here and based on the reveal at the end I would think there is more than meets the eye.

Let’s get the credits out of the way for starters. The cover credits Cliff Chiang. Fair enough. In the credits on the title page under the cover it credits the artwork done by Mike Norton and the cover by Chiang. Add in a spelling error on page five and we have a messy looking job. What kind of awful editing job is this? Does DC not have a QA department?

On to the review of the issue. Green Arrow and Team Arrow found the cloaking ship that shot his son, with some alien pilots. Green Lantern arrives to help out with the alien physiology and the like. The only problem is that the two dudes are just wearing rubber masks and are really from New Jersey. This whole sequence has wit and excellent dialogue between all the characters. This was excellently executed.

Next comes the interrogation of the Jersey boys. It’s more humor and is well worth the few panels spent on it. These scenes are what makes this series so different and interesting. I think I finally “get” what these characterizations are all about.

Ollie, Dinah and Mia all go undercover in England. This is where the issue gets cooking. We finally get some insight into who has been pulling the strings on this whole thing. We get a couple of interesting characters in this scene. One of them, DC apparently made a copy of Gambit and gave him a British accent. The end gives a very interesting twist on who the main villain really is, if you can believe what DC-Gambit tells them. Oh yeah, and there is a nice fight at the end to boot.

A very good issue. There is only one problem with this story and that is the lack of an urgency about Connor being kidnapped. It’s barely been touched on since the kidnapping occurred. This is a real shame because the rage Ollie shows is palpable, but why wouldn’t he be reminding everyone about the disappearance of his son?

I loved the banter throughout the whole issue. The nice part about the dialogue is that is it backed up with excellent artwork. All the right facial expressions are hit for the jokes and to capture the drama, when needed. The art is really well done.

Another solid issue in this series. I know I’ve said this before, but I just don’t know how this reboot made this series so much more interesting. You factor in how much I hated the wedding issue and you’d think I would have hated this series, but the exact opposite has happened. This has become one of the must reads each and every month.

4 out of 5 geek goggles.
