The folks over at ComicConnect had quite the auction that resulted in the sale of Detective Comics #27 selling for $850k!

DETECTIVE COMICS #27

Winning the attention of TMZ, ComicConnect auctioned off a 6.0 CGC Graded Detective Comics #27 and won BIG. What makes DC #27 important, as I'm sure most of you know, is that it is the first appearance of Batman/Bruce Wayne and a Golden Age beauty. It was originally released for a whopping 10 cents in 1939 by DC Comics. What a journey the character went on to have!

The last (and only) time a CGC graded 6.0 sold was by ComicConnect back in March 2018. It had sold for $732k. That makes this new $850k sale the highest of its grade. The only other completed sale that was higher was a million-dollar sale from 2018. I say completed for a reason... More on that in a bit.

There are currently 71 copies of this comic in the CGC Census with only 33 being blue labels and 37 being the restored purple table. Routinely, blue labels sell for way more than restored. For example, a 9.2 restored label sold in 2018 for $180k compared to this blue label 6.0. People who don't care about the colors are getting an amazing discount on an iconic comic! For those that do care, and golden age comic in a blue label is going to bring in BIG bucks.

CURRENT AUCTIONS

Heritage Auctions currently has a CGC graded 7.0 Blue label DC #27 on auction. The current bid is at $912,500. Including the buyers' premium, it's at $1,095,000! That means they have already surpassed their previous record that was $1,075,500. ComicConnect is going to hold on to that highest sale of a 6.0 (until another sells higher obviously). After that sale is complete, that would make ComicConnect's $850k the 3rd highest sale for this comic. I'm looking forward to seeing where that sale is going to end.

COMPARISON SPECULATION

Here's an interesting topic for you that may end up being its own blog entirely at some point. DC #27 is the first appearance of Batman, iconic. Though Batman #1 is the first appearance of the Joker and Catwoman and was released a year later. Not exactly small names. Though the current estimated FMV for a 6.0 Batman #1 is $250k and a 7.0 is at $340k... Those are dramatically different prices compared to the first appearance of Batman. While I understand why Batman's first appearance is more valuable, why do you think people are willing to put that much more down for him compared to the others? Do you see Batman #1 also increasing over time to close the gap between DC#27? Or could the difference be due to the number of graded comics available for each - 71 for DC #27 and 272 for Batman #1? Again, something interesting that came up in conversation in the office and I'd be interested to know your take on it.

DETECTIVE COMICS #27 WRAP UP

Moving back to Detective Comics and the amazing sales surrounding it. What do you guys think? How much do you think that 7.0 will sell for? Personally, I'm going to set an alarm for the 23rd. Let me know your thoughts about it all!
