What do Venom, Doctor Voodoo, Elektra, Wolverine, Punisher, and Conan the Barbarian all have in common? They are part of the Savage Avengers written by Gerry Duggan with art from Mike Deodato Jr. The premise? These bloodthirsty heroes are brought together as the tip of the spear, a weapon forged in the fires of revenge. "The blood of the fiercest warriors is required for a powerful spell, and they are summoned by evil forces that wish to destroy our civilization" (Gerry Duggan Comic Preview April 26). This is an epic event for the Marvel Universe and an interesting team to put together. I hear Duggan brings the fun too with Conan and Wolverine coffeehousing.  Can this Savage Avenger tale fill our coffers with gold?

Savage Avengers #1 (Deodato Variant)

The Savage Avengers take on the City of Sickles and The dreaded Hand. In addition, a new apparition rears its ugly head the Marrow God, don't put your hands on the cage of this hot book. An analysis of this issue is pretty tough as we have no standing CGC sales to speak of. However, it looks like the price is still around cover price. The Savage Avengers #1 (Elektra Gabriel Dell'Otto Variant Cover B) is the ticket, currently running about $35 on eBay and is a limited edition of 1000 only. This comic is destined to rise.

Detective Comics #1000 (Alex Ross Art Exclusive A)

Covers by Alex Ross are simply epic, with his style of turning the superhero into an icon. In Detective Comics #1000 (Alex Ross Art Exclusive A) he has done it again with a Noir-Batman and very Dick Tracy like setting. Try to get your hands on this variant it will probably subside its initial growth for now but is a classic and already shows some decent sales in CGC slabs. Can you make money with this iconic artist?

Long-Term Returns:

  • Grade 9.9 $390 last sale price returns negative -24.2
  • Grade 9.8 $300 FMV returns negative -15.6%
  • Grade 9.6 $150 FMV returns positive N/A one sale at $150
  • Grade 9.4 $120 FMV returns positive N/A

Alex Ross work will probably always bring some premium with it. However, given the previous declines being so extreme do not rush in. Remember "the wise man listens while the fool chatters" (Remo Williams), and only fools rush in. Bide your time and a copy of this can be yours too. Could it end up in the dollar bin? They really overprinted this #1000 event, to be sure. Eighty years of the Bat might be a significant milestone but you don't need to turn it into a profit graveyard.

Detective Comics #1000 (JeeHyung Lee Variant Cover)

My personal favorite of the myriad Detective Comics #1000 covers is the Harley Quinn. Detective Comics #1000 (JeeHyung Lee Variant Cover) captured every curve of her abdominal muscles, basically the Harley from the Suicide Squad movie. It also appears to be dropping in value at the beginning of the month it sold for $99 initial just recently the last sale grade 9.8 was $85. With only 57 in inventory with CGC Census, this is literally the beginning. If I had to bet on one of these comics to last it might just be zany Harley.
