The first time Professor Hulk appeared was in Incredible Hulk #377. There are many different shades of green in the various prints for this book. It was created by Peter David (writer), Dale Keown, and Bob McLeod (art) in 1990. It is one of the interesting aspects of Hulk, a smart Hulk. In addition to Professor Hulk, it was also the first appearance of Guilt Hulk the avatar of Banner's guilt. The first printing of this comic is valuable but is put to shame by the second and third printing. Apparently, the 2nd and 3rd printing are highly sought after due to low print runs.

Incredible Hulk #377 (2nd Print)

The second print has 245 outstanding books with the CGC Census. The increase in price is solid for a Modern Age book, which costs $50 for a grade 8.0 as of April 2019. This is a pretty broad price appreciation for a Modern Age book and exactly the kind of book a modern collector should be hunting for. Anecdotal evidence is interesting as well, some dealers will use this book as a "hidden gem" during sale days. The last sale I went to at a local retail store had a fifty percent off bin sale and while I was searching for deals, I found this hidden gem Incredible Hulk #377. Yee Ha! A big-time collector and speculator noticed it in my stack and mentioned "Norm, so you found the gem, nice dude!" Is what I found valuable and is it an investment to hold or just a quick flip?

Long-Term

  • Grade 9.8 $280 FMV returns positive +24.8%
  • Grade 9.6 $85 FMV returns negative -28.9%
  • Grade 9.4 $80 FMV returns negative -13.6%
  • Grade 9.2 $65 FMV returns positive +23.4%
  • Grade 9.0 $50 FMV returns positive +80.7%

The second print obviously has value and the above copy can return as much as 80.7%. As mentioned earlier, these are the kind of books Modern Age investors, collectors and speculators should be buying,  due to very limited print runs. It certainly made the clients of the retail store green with envy. Heh, heh, heh...

Incredible Hulk #377 (3rd Print)

Even though professor Hulk has come and gone in the Avengers: Endgame we probably won't see him anytime soon. However, we are left with rare, limited print runs like Incredible Hulk #377 (3rd Print). You can tell it by the lime green cover and the shade of green means one thing: money, baby, money! These numbers are a little staggering to see with a Modern Age book with grade 9.8 is in the $2450 range and even a grade 6.5 goes for $290. Let's check out these returns:

Long-Term

  • Grade 9.8 $2450 FMV returns positive +90.4%
  • Grade 9.6 $825 FMV returns positive +118.3%
  • Grade 9.4 $575 FMV returns positive +132.2%
  • Grade 8.0 $375 FMV returns positive +116.9%
  • Grade 7.0 $290 FMV returns positive +51.5%

Conclusion:

The returns are staggering and make any reasonable person check their copy. Which shade of Professor Hulk do you own? It just gets better, the total books outstanding are 221 in the CGC Census. That is not many books for a Modern Age comic. Bottom line, if you own bright green Hulk you are a happy puppy; but if you own lime green background Hulk you are ecstatic! Then you can sit back and count the shades of Greenbacks in your bank account.
