Founded in 1967, Hake's Auctions was established as the first auction house in the U.S. for collectibles. Hake's offers a wide array of collectibles, including concert posters, video games, comic books, and original comic book art. This month, Hake's is auctioning nearly 100 pieces of original comic book art, including the original cover art for several issues of Superman and Action Comics.  Let's talk about some of these covers below.

Item 1136: Original Cover Art for Action Comics #467

Auction item 1136 is the original cover art for Action Comics #467, published by DC in January 1977. Drawn by Bob Oksner (1916-2007), the cover, which depicts Superman destroying parts of Manhattan near the Empire State Building, exploits one of our greatest fears -- what if Superman turned into a villain? DC has explored this classic storyline several times including in the Injustice video game series and in films like Superman 3.

As of March 20th, item 1136 had received seven bids. The current bid is $4,000.00.

Item 1159: Original Cover Art for Superman Vol. 2 #62

Auction item 1159 is the original cover art for Superman Vol. 2 #63, published in January of 1992. Drawn by Dan Jurgens, the writer and artist most famous for creating Doomsday, and inked by Brett Breeding, Breeding also signed the cover on the left margin.

The cover depicts Aquaman and Superman swimming side-by-side just above a sunken ship. In my opinion, if this issue featured a race between Aquaman and Superman to determine who was the fastest swimmer, then this book likely be a serious collector's item! Even so, it features great art by Jurgens of two founding members of the Justice League.

As of March 20th, item 1159 had received four bids. The current bid is $2,555.00.

Item 1138: Original Cover Art for Action Comics #866

Auction item #1138 is the original cover art for Action Comics #866, published by DC Comics in August 2008. The cover was drawn by Gary Frank and inked by Brad Anderson. Geoff Johns has described Frank's work on Superman as being the best of their generation. Frank, who began working on Superman in 2007, has stated in interviews that he draws inspiration from Christopher Reeves' iconic performance in the Superman films. Frank has initialed the cover art in the lower right-hand corner.

Action Comics #866 serves as the first issue of the "First Contact" storyline. Its cover depicts Superman surrounded by miniaturized "bottle cities" created by Brainiac, an alien cyborg genius and one of Superman's greatest foes. Brainiac lurks in the background behind Superman. Some of the bottled cities feature some of the most important people in Superman's life including Lois Lane, and Jonathan and Martha Kent.

As of March 20th, item 1138 had received six bids. The current bid is $3,055.25.
