Polka-Dot ManJames Gunn and Suicide Squad 2 have given comic collectors much to ponder in recent weeks. Once again, I bring you tidings of great joy and more key issues to watch, including Polka-Dot Man.

At Fandome, Gunn revealed a full cast list for the Suicide Squad sequel. It was loaded with DC Comics rejects from the Golden Age to the Modern Era. There is a reason he has so many characters in the movie, and many of them will be cannon fodder. On that happy note, here are three lovable losers who likely won't make it to the end credits.

Polka-Dot Man

Polka-Dot ManDETECTIVE COMICS #300

Of all the characters on today’s list, Polka-Dot Man is my favorite and has the best chance of surviving through the end of the movie. Still, his odds aren't exactly good.

A relic of Batman’s Silver Age shenanigans, Polka-Dot Man debuted in the milestone Detective Comics #300. For a first appearance from 1962, the prices are still affordable. Four different grades have sold in 2020, selling for as low as $150 for both a 3.0 and a 4.0, and as much as the 8.5 that brought $276 in February.

Ratcatcher

Polka-Dot ManDETECTIVE COMICS #585

Yes, the concept for the Ratcatcher is lame, but I have to admit that his aesthetic is engaging. In this age of quarantines and face masks, his costume, particularly the gas mask, is unnerving. Of course, there is no doubt that he will be good for a few laughs and cast aside. Gunn has already warned not to get too attached to any of the characters, which explains why there are so many new faces in the upcoming movie. Ratcatcher is definitely going to get the ax during the movie because there is not much of a story to tell in his case. That makes him prime for a brutal death that will be played for laughs.

Still, it is always good to see obscure characters shine on the silver screen, even if it is momentary. The added attention has given his first appearance in Detective Comics #585 a boost. Last year, the 9.8 had an FMV of $140, which was double the 2018 average. In fact, all six sales in 2019 netted progressively higher record sales, capping at $158 in December. So far in 2020, there has only been one 9.8 sold online, but it did pull in $140 this past June.

Mongal

SHOWCASE ‘95 #8 & SUPERMAN #170 (2001)

This is yet another new character for Squad 2 that I knew nothing about. Apparently, Mongal is the daughter of Mongul the Elder, the much-more famous Superman villain. She is the twin brother of Mongul the Younger, who eventually decapitates her in an act of family bonding only comic books could imagine. That makes me fairly certain she will get the ax during the movie. However, the bigger picture is she could help set up an introduction to Mongul for a future Superman, Green Lantern, or Justice League film.

Mongal had a short-lived stint in the DC Universe. It began in Showcase ‘95 #8, where she was unnamed. In 2001’s Superman #170, she joined her brother in a fight against the Man of Steel and was given a proper name.

Neither issue is hard to find online for cheap prices. These issues have been so unpopular that there have been no recorded sales of graded comics for either.
