Trust me, you don’t want cookies baked by this grandma because Granny Goodness’ secret ingredient is evil.

One of Jack Kirby’s New Gods characters, Granny Goodness is among Darkseid’s most loyal servants. In her early life on Apokolips, she was part of the “lowlies,” the oppressed slave class of the hellish world.

Once she was recruited to be one of Darkseid’s elite warriors, called “Hounds,” she rose through the ranks. After being put in charge of the “orphanages” where she tortured and brainwashed children to make them murderous Darkseid fanatics, her cruel form of child care earned her the ironic name, “Granny Goodness.”

Over the years, she has made television appearances in the cartoons Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited and in the live-action Smallville. However, it’s her cameo in Zack Snyder’s Justice League that gives her future potential.

With nearly all the players from the Snyder-verse back in the DCEU, it stands to reason that Darkseid and his minions will once again invade Earth-One. In that event, we are likely to see Granny Goodness in all her evil glory. That should have you on the lookout for these issues.

MISTER MIRACLE #2

The first time readers were introduced to Granny Goodness was in the pages of Kirby’s Mister Miracle series from 1971. The head of Darkseid’s training made her debut here, and that makes this the key to own. It doesn’t hurt matters that she’s on the cover as well. Being part of the New Gods in the DC pantheon, it is fitting that her story began with Mister Miracle

Coming across a graded 9.8 Mister Miracle #2 is fairly rare. That explains why the most recent sale was from 2019 for over $1k. As usual, the price drops considerably when the grade comes down to a 9.6. Three years ago, it brought as much as $900 and was still earning in the $500-$575 up until January. However, the last sale saw the value fall to $361 last month.

MISTER MIRACLE #6

Granny Goodness is forever tied to her evil proteges, the Furies of Apokolips. These are Darkseid’s deadliest soldiers that he sends for the most cruel and violent of duties. Think of them as a combination of Thanos’ children and Wakanda’s Dora Milaje, but much more bloodthirsty than both. Guess who handles making the Furies into near-unstoppable killing machines? Everyone’s favorite diabolical grandma. That’s what makes Mister Miracle #6 both a Furies and Granny Goodness key issue.

There’s been a stark contrast in prices over the last two sales of graded 9.8s. In September 2021, a copy sold for $1,999. Then in July, that value dropped to $1k. While the 9.8 may have experienced an FMV drop, the 9.6 has been on the move. After selling for $265 last September, October 1 saw one earn $595.

COUNTDOWN #21

Nearly 40 years after making her comic debut, Granny Goodness finally got an origin story in 2008. While nowhere near a major key, Granny’s fans will want this one in their collections as it is a hallmark for the character. This is such an overlooked issue that there are no graded sales on record, nor are there any recent eBay sales for raw copies. On the bright side, that means you can likely find it in your local comic shop’s dollar bin.

GIVE GRANNY A KISS

With the possibility of the Snyder-verse getting a reboot of sorts thanks to Black Adam’s massive cameo, we could see more of Granny in the DCEU. While we had merely a tease of her in the Snyder cut of JL, the director’s original plan likely would have featured her in somewhat of a larger role. If Darkseid and his minions are in the DCEU’s future plans, with or without Snyder, Granny Goodness may be a future star.
