Welcome back to this week’s Oddball Heritage Items! Each week, we look at the unique items in Heritage’s weekly comic event auctions — after all, there is a treasure or two to be found in these auctions! In the past, we’ve looked at a wide range of fun and unique items such as napkins, toy lots, spinner racks, and more. There’s always something new and unusual in these weekly auctions, so let’s see what we can find this week!

Captain America 50th Anniversary Watch

To commemorate Captain America turning 50, Marvel pulled no punches. From special comic books to memorabilia such as this watch, Cap was on a merchandise roll. Collectible watches might seem like a stretch, but watches and popular comic and cartoon characters can go hand in hand. For example, Mickey Mouse is always a popular watch theme-- some Mickey watches even date back as far as the 1930s. I myself have a number of Archie Comic watches that I keep in my collection.  It should come as no surprise that watches can be worth big money, if it's the right item.

This 50th Anniversary Watch was released in 1992 by Tomorrow's Treasures Inc., and has a .999 pure solid silver dial with a gold overlay. The band is black leather, and per Heritage, the watch appears to be in Excellent and unworn condition. Two similar watches were sold in April 2022 through Heritage, with prices ending at $174 and $134 respectively.

The J. R. R. Tolkien Calendar 1975

We've mentioned calendars a lot as of late. Perhaps it's that time of year when everyone buys a new one -- or it's just a coincidence. This 1975 J.R.R. Tolkien is a unique find -- it has never been opened from its original, and also unopened, shipping box. This brand new, mint condition calendar features Middle Earth artwork from Tim Kirk and would present beautifully. That is if you want to open it!

While calendars may not be an investment dream, they are cool collector's pieces. Similar calendars have sold on eBay for under $30, but unlike those calendars, this one is mint in the box!

The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide

The Overstreet Price Guide has been a collectors and investors staple since the first book. The guide gives prices based on previous years' sales data, as well as marketplace articles by a team of advisors -- such as myself! I've been collecting old Overstreets for several years. It's always fun to see how much Action Comics #1 used to be compared to now. And while the prices may be inaccurate now, it's still an important part of collectible history.

This 6th edition features The Spirit and his pals, drawn by the legendary Will Eisner. Heritage notes this book as being in Very Fine+ condition. Early editions can go for over $100 -- but it's hard to say if this book will go for that. The last time Heritage sold a 6th edition was in 2011, and that auction ended at $74. On eBay, a similar copy sold for $5.99 in November 2022.
